Senior Counselor – Seasonal Position

We are seeking enthusiastic and responsible individuals to join our team as Senior Camp Counselors.  Senior Counselors supervise 1-3 counselors and provide behavior and programming support to their group, as well as providing a safe, supportive, and fun-filled experience for campers.  You will lead and facilitate a variety of recreational activities, mentor campers, and ensure their well-being throughout their time at camp.  Senior Counselors are responsible for the day-to-day activities of one group of 10-20 campers in Camp Chris, Exploration Camps, or Eagles Sports Camps!

St. John’s Prep is an inclusive, Catholic, Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School for young men in grades 6 through 12. We enroll approximately 1,500 students from more than 90 communities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervising Counselors:

  • Supervise daily activities of one group of campers- accurate attendance, regular headcounts, adherence to the schedule, and support during provided activities, and leadership during counselor-driven activities.
  • Supervision of 1-3 counselors, including helping them set goals and writing evaluations.
  • Following the schedule in a timely fashion, including good communication when you will be late.
  • Management of staff breaks, making sure safe ratios are maintained.

Supervising Campers:

  • Monitor campers during all activities, meals, and rest periods to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Enforce camp rules and regulations consistently and fairly.
  • Act as a positive role model and mentor for campers, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

Communicating with Parents/Guardians:

  • In coordination with the Camp Coordinator, maintain open and transparent communication with parents or guardians, providing regular updates on camper activities, achievements, and challenges.
  • Address any concerns or questions parents may have in a professional and timely manner.
  • Collaborate with camp leadership to ensure parents are informed and involved in their child’s camp experience.

Leading Activities:

  • Plan and lead engaging and age appropriate activities, including sports, arts and crafts, nature hikes, games, and team building activities.
  • Adapt activities to accommodate campers with diverse interests, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Encourage active participation and enthusiasm among campers.

Mentoring and Guidance:

  • Provide guidance, support, and encouragement to campers as they navigate social interactions and personal challenges.
  • Foster positive relationships among campers and promote cooperation and teamwork.
  • Listen attentively to campers’ concerns and offer assistance and referrals as needed.

Supervising Campers:

  • Address camper behavior issues promptly and effectively, using positive reinforcement, redirection, and appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary.
  • Teach conflict resolution skills and encourage campers to resolve conflicts peacefully and respectfully.
  • Maintain a calm and composed demeanor during challenging situations.

Ensuring Health and Safety

  • Administer basic first aid and respond to medical emergencies according to camp protocols.
  • Promote good hygiene practices and ensure campers follow safety guidelines during activities.
  • Conduct regular safety checks of equipment and facilities and report any hazards or concerns to camp leadership.

Building Community:

  • Organize group activities and games to foster a sense of community and belonging among campers.
  • Encourage campers to make new friends and build positive relationships with their peers.
  • Support camp-wide initiatives and events designed to strengthen the camp community.

Day to Day Routine:

  • Camp staff day starts at 8:30am, and ends at 4:15pm. All staff members have a 30 minute on campus break.
  • Assist campers with all parts of their day – belongings management, restroom breaks, swim time, etc.
  • This position reports to the group’s Camp Coordinator.

Other Job Duties:

Attendance at staff training and staff meetings is mandatory.  Some Senior Counselors may have additional responsibilities if they are attached to Sports or Exploration Camps, which may include- curriculum planning, equipment or supply procurement, camp-specific meetings.  Other duties may be assigned as necessary.


  • Previous experience working with children in a camp, school, or recreational setting preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire campers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
  • Passion for outdoor education, recreation, and youth development.
  • Minimum age requirement: must be at least 16 years old as of June 5, 2024.
  • Must be able to work at least 7 of the 10 camp weeks and must attend all pre-camp orientation sessions.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

Summer at St. John’s is set on a 175-acre rolling campus with two pools and seven fields.  Candidates must be able to follow the camper schedule on foot each day, be able to lift up to 30 pounds, participate in games and activities, and maintain a healthy presence during the long outdoor camp day.
