About You

You are an experienced middle school teacher (Classes 6-8) who seeks to share your love of science and interest in design thinking with others. You have excellent organizational and relationship building skills and are adept at guiding and supporting students in the classroom and in their extracurricular pursuits. You enjoy the rhythm and energy of an independent day school and demonstrate integrity, humor, and sound judgment in everything you do.

To be successful in this role, you must be able to:

  • Create an engaging learning environment using project-based learning and inquiry-based instruction
  • Teach four sections of science to students in Classes 6-8, developing and delivering lessons on topics outlined in the school curriculum, including lessons in physical sciences (e.g., engineering, physics, electricity, or chemistry)
  • Encourage critical thinking skills that encourages students to ask and answer questions using data
  • Nurture an interest in design thinking and support students’ facility with design tools in our maker space
  • Support the development of student passion projects in the School’s maker space
  • Develop entrepreneurial and service-based, student-designed projects
  • Supervise student projects and laboratory work
  • Support learning in the area of computer coding
  • Evaluate and grade students’ class work, laboratory performance, assignments, and exams
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues and serve on academic or administrative committees
  • Advise students and participate in campus and community events
  • Fully engage in School-sponsored professional development programs and department meetings
  • Remain knowledgeable of instructional and curriculum trends, goals, and objectives
  • Coach and/or advise at least two extracurricular sports, clubs, or activities
  • Actively support an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, diverse identities and perspectives, and respect for all voices
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in design, engineering, or physical science field.; advanced degree in subject matter preferred
  • At least three years of full-time teaching experience that includes science-based curriculum development
  • Experience in design thinking, project-based learning, and inquiry-based science; experience overseeing maker space facilities highly desirable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology and computer coding with design programs such as CAD or Adobe InDesign; ability to lead instruction on electrical circuits
  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, and conduct comprehensive lesson plans and instruction
  • Demonstrated knowledge in teaching principles, theories, methods, behavior management techniques, and conflict resolution strategies
  • Understanding of academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of middle school students
  • Ability to create and contribute to an engaging and inclusive learning environment and workplace
  • History of continued education or professional development
  • Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities and assignments
