General Description

Friends Academy seeks a skilled teacher to cover a family leave in the Sally Borden Program from August 2022 to November 2022. The Sally Borden Program is a specialized program within Friends Academy for students in grades 3-8 with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. Lower School teachers in the Sally Borden Program comprise third, fourth, and fifth grades. Teachers in this role serve as a homeroom teacher for students in their class as well as an instructor for mathematics, social studies, language arts, and a small group for Orton-Gillingham intervention. Sally Borden Lower School teachers also provide explicit instruction in executive functions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Design and implement lessons that are aligned with the school’s curriculum and current standards of best practices
  • Differentiate lessons to meet diverse needs of Sally Borden Program learners
  • Assess student learning with formative and quantitative assessment tools 
  • Report student learning through student portfolios, narrative report cards, and conferences
  • Communicate with families on a regular basis, acting as a point of contact regarding a student’s academic, social, and emotional functioning
  • Implement a social-emotional curriculum within the homeroom to develop a classroom community consistent with the culture of Friends Academy
  • Collaborate with grade-level teaching partners, as well as division and department members
  • Participate in meetings and committees associated with the role and faculty position

Qualification Requirements:

The role of a Sally Borden Program faculty member begins with an enthusiastic, dedicated educator who believes in collaboration and a team approach to helping students find success. The role is best suited for teachers who are creative, flexible, and maintain an attitude that encourages both teamwork and personal responsibility. The teacher candidate should be well-versed in technology so that they are able to utilize technology to enhance student learning. Experience or willingness to use a Google platform and assistive technologies is necessary. Candidates should:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Feel a strong alignment with Friends Academy’s Mission and Philosophy
  • Have experience working with students with dyslexia and language-based learning differences
  • Hold an Associate level of Orton-Gillingham certification or are willing to be trained
  • Have strong interpersonal skills that foster trust and collaboration
  • Seek fresh, creative ways to bring learning to life in a engaging environment
  • Value working as part of a team and making contributions to a shared vision of the best possible learning outcomes for students
