Commonwealth School, Boston, MA
Commonwealth School in Boston seeks an artist and photography teacher to teach darkroom, digital, and video photography. Beginning in January 2022, this part-time position is perfect for a working and exhibiting photographer/artist who has experience working with teenagers in a group or community setting and would be passionate about contributing to the life of a vibrant school community. The position entails teaching three days a week (this academic year, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) and attending weekly faculty meetings on Tuesday afternoons.
This academic year classes include:
Beginning Photography. The first semester, students used film cameras, learned to develop their own film, and worked to produce well-crafted prints in the darkroom. The second semester is devoted to learning how to tone SGP prints, building and using pinhole cameras, and, toward the end of the year, starting work in Photoshop and Lightroom with scanned pinhole negatives.
Advanced Photography. Students work with digital cameras and learn to refine and manipulate their images working with Photoshop and Lightroom. Students are also encouraged to investigate alternative media such as cyanotype, Vandyke brown, and Solarplate, and with medium- and large-format film cameras.
In future years, the course offerings may expand to include an introductory video/film class.
The teacher should put emphasis on learning and refining skills—both observational and technical—in a stimulating and supportive environment. Beginning photographers are encouraged to ask questions, to take chances, and to try nontraditional approaches. To think outside the box. They are encouraged to explore a variety of subject matter of their choosing and to discover a personal vision through closely investigating the world around them. Advanced photographers are encouraged to work with images from their imagination and from life. The teacher works closely with students to help them explore, improve their technique, and discover their own strengths and style.
The primary goal of our photography classes is to encourage students to constantly explore the world with their cameras, to peel away layers of photographic clichés and move closer to a personal vision, developing a style along the way, discovering images that are unique and particular to themselves.
Salary range is $36,000–$41,000, depending upon experience, and the position includes benefits: participation in a healthcare plan (the school pays 75% toward health insurance), a flexible spending account, dental insurance, group life insurance, and long-term disability insurance.
