We are seeking an experienced theatre teacher with specific expertise in musical theatre and vocal instruction. Primary responsibilities will include teaching lower school theatre classes, leading lower school choral groups, and assisting with theatre productions. Basic piano proficiency is a valuable supplement to these roles. Theatre classes will focus on introducing students to basic principles of acting and stagecraft through fun and engaging activities, aimed at fostering an appreciation for theatre and the performing arts. Lower school music classes will focus on choral singing and will require the teaching of proper vocal technique and general musicianship. Assistance with theatre productions will involve working with students in the middle and upper school divisions.

To be successful in this role, you must:

  • Promote a performing arts culture where individual contributions and teamwork are valued
  • Develop a theatre curriculum that helps students to develop voice projection, expression, self-confidence, and a love of the performing arts.
  • Create developmentally appropriate lesson plans to actively engage students in learning and exploring vocal instruction, styles, and concepts (e.g., beat, rhythm, pitch, notes, and symbols)
  • Identify the learning strengths and needs of students to promote an appreciation for performance
  • Select age-appropriate choral repertoire that includes a diverse range of musical styles.
  • Lead all aspects of music and theatre performances from classroom instruction to rehearsals and performances,
  • Collaborate with colleagues on all matters related to program design, production selection, curriculum delivery, timetable, budgets, and other matters
  • Remain current on new teaching methods and curriculum developments to assess curriculum and program delivery to ensure continuous improvement and expansion
  • Ensure effective assessment tools are in place to assess, record, and report on student progress
  • Organize, order and maintain inventory of materials (e.g., licenses, instruments, etc.)
  • Attend and actively participate in faculty meetings, in-service training, and parent-teacher conferences
  • Actively engage in relevant professional development opportunities
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with focus in music education or theatre arts; advanced degree preferred
  • At least two years of full-time music experience working with school students (PreK-Class 8)
  • Proficiency in subject matter and subject-specific training and instruction
  • Ability to sight read music and provide musical accompaniment on piano or keyboard
  • Effective interpersonal, time management, and communication skills (oral, written, non-verbal)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various constituents
  • Knowledge of teaching principles, methods, behavior management and conflict resolution strategies
  • Understanding of academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of lower and middle school students
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, and conduct comprehensive lesson plans and instruction
  • Demonstrated creativity to promote a motivating and engaging learning environment
  • History of continued education or professional development in assigned subject area(s)
  • Commitment to create and contribute to an engaging and inclusive learning environment and workplace
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work priorities and needs
