Brimmer and May, a PK-12 all-gender day school in Chestnut Hill, MA, is seeking a half-time PK–12 Technical Theater Director. The Director plays a vital role by overseeing technical operations across all performance spaces and events. This position ensures that theater productions, assemblies, guest speakers, and special events are executed safely, professionally, and in line with the School’s commitment to excellence in the arts. In addition to the primary responsibilities below, excellent written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, punctuality, dependability, and adherence to all personal policies, procedures, and rules in the Brimmer and May Faculty and Staff Handbooks are essential.

Primary Responsibilities

Theater & Performance Operations
• Oversee theater scheduling and supervise all technical support for School performances, assemblies, guest speakers, visiting artists, and special events.
• Participate in monthly Performance Group meetings to ensure clear communication, coordination, and planning across programs.
• Provide and supervise sound and microphone support across campus spaces, including the Theater, Dining Room, Innovation Space, Library, and other venues as needed in conjunction with the Technology Department.
• Co-supervise with the Technology Department the live streaming, recording, and archiving of theater events and performances.
• Maintain and update MS & US Photo walls and photo books, as well as Video Archives and Video Sharing.

Facilities & Space Oversight
• Supervise and maintain Chase and Hastings arts spaces, including the Lower School Music Room, Band Room, Upper School Music Room, Scene Shop, and the stage, backstage areas, and attic storage.
• Ensure all performance and production spaces meet safety standards, with particular attention to the stage, backstage, Scene Shop, and storage areas. Maintain OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets and schedule regular inspections of theater rigging & genie lifts.
• Ensure the stage and backstage areas remain as clear as possible and are maintained in a “neutral state” to provide a safe and professional environment for the concurrent schedule of daily classes, assemblies, and community events.
• Coordinate with the maintenance/facilities team to ensure necessary floor prep and cleaning are completed so that the theater is “show-ready,” prior to major events.

Technical Direction & Production
• Design, supervise, and schedule the safe construction of stage scenery and production elements for 5 mainstage productions: US fall play, MS fall play, US musical, LS musical, and MS musical.

• Work with CFO and Creative Arts Chair to adhere to Production Budget and maintain contracts and payments for Production Staff: Costumes, Lighting, Sound, Makeup, Choreography, Painters & Carpenters on a show-to-show basis.

• Lead Friday afternoon and evening build sessions in support of productions.

• Maintain and inventory all technical equipment, including lighting and sound equipment in the booth and on stage, and scene shop tools and materials as well as sound and lighting equipment in Dining Commons, Innovation Space and New Gym.

Theater Rentals & External Use
• Supervise theater rentals, coordinating logistics and technical needs.
• Work with the CFO to manage contracts and ensure alignment with School policies and procedures.

Teaching
• Teach Stagecraft in the Fall and Production in the spring.

Qualifications & Skills
• A B.A. in Theater or Technical Theater (masters preferred) and experience in technical theater, stage management, or production support (school or professional setting preferred).
• Strong knowledge of sound, lighting, scenic design, and scenic construction and painting.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety practices in performance and construction environments.
• Must be able to manage lifting heavy materials.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, administrators, and external partners.
• Organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple events and timelines simultaneously.

• Availability for afternoon, evening, and occasional weekend commitments.

This position reports to the Creative Arts Department Chair, the Assistant Head of School, and the Middle and Upper School Division Heads. This position will be 20 hours a week, with longer hours during production weeks and for events.
