Part Time Lower School Science Specialist

Cambridge Friends School, a pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade Quaker School located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is seeking a part-time (.4 FTE – two full days) Lower School Science Specialist to co-teach science classes for grades one through four for the 2024-2025 school year. A successful candidate will be knowledgeable in developmentally and grade-appropriate science content and pedagogy and a collaborative educator who is experienced and committed to inquiry, project-based learning, and the scientific process. Candidates should be committed to culturally responsive teaching that makes meaningful connections between students’ identities and life experiences and their learning and be invested in the School’s ongoing anti-bias efforts. The successful candidate will be responsive to student interests and open to ways to incorporate emergent science within the curriculum.
Science in grades 1-4 is taught with the homeroom teachers and ranges from lead teaching to a co-teaching model (science specialist manages materials and much of planning when co-teaching). The Lower School Science specialist is available to consult with teachers in grades pre-K and K, offering support with curriculum and materials. The Lower School Science Specialist takes an active role in other aspects of school life (some lunch and recess coverage, participation in community events such as weekly Meeting for Worship, assemblies, division, and full faculty meetings, report writing, and other duties as assigned.)

Candidates should have:
- A Bachelors degree in a field related to education or science, Masters preferred
- Previous teaching experience, preferably in Lower School Science
- Experience in designing and implementing a wide range of science curricula for grades 1-4
- Demonstrated background in science either through coursework or work experience
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Familiarity with Next Generation Standards (NGSS) philosophy and standards, able to work in the four domains of science at all grade levels (life science, physical science, earth/space science, technology/engineering)
- Experienced in designing and implementing a wide range of science curricula for grades 1-4
- Familiarity with Responsive Classroom and Restorative Justice
- Strengths in working collaboratively with colleagues in the classroom and the wider community
- Strong written and communication skills
- Strong planning and organizational skills, as well as the ability to manage a wide range of resource
