The Cambridge School of Weston seeks a Costume Design Teacher for the months of August 19, 2024, through June 18, 2025. The teacher will design the fall play (Kate Hamil’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice)  and spring musical (TBD) and mentor students in designing and building costumes. The teacher will also work with props design students to ensure that the props for the fall play and spring musical are thoughtfully executed in a timely manner. In both the props and costume design areas, the teacher will work with the students to ensure that the learning experience is carefully scaffolded from paperwork to production. 

We seek candidates who value student-centered, hands-on learning and are supportive of individual students while challenging them to take meaningful, creative risks. Candidates should be able to recognize and appreciate the diverse perspectives of the students they work with and create opportunities to integrate these perspectives in their teaching/designing. 

Specific Responsibilities for This Position Include: 

  • Design and facilitate the costumes for the fall play and spring musical. 
  • Oversee and organize a student group that will serve as a costume, wardrobe, and props team.
  • Teach students costume design, construction, and alteration as well as props creation and coordination.  
  • Restock and organize costumes after the production. 
  • Write End-of-Mod comments summarizing each student’s learning and growth 
  • The rehearsal and design/production processes for the fall play run from September 4 through  November 22. These dates are inclusive of strike. Performance dates/times are November 14 at 7 p.m., November 15 at 7 p.m., November 16 at 2 p.m., and 7 p.m. Costume and Props Design meeting class times for the fall play are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 3:15 p.m. to  5:30 p.m. with two Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Two weeks before the production, technical rehearsals will run from 3:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and  Fridays with a Saturday tech rehearsal from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dinners will be provided during the weekday technical rehearsals that run until 7:30 p.m. 
  • The rehearsal and design/production processes for the spring musical run from March 24 through  June 12. These dates are inclusive of strike. Performance dates/times are June 5 at 7 p.m., June 6  at 7 p.m., and June 7 at 1 p.m. Costume and Props Design meeting class times for the spring musical are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 3:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with two  Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Three weeks before the production, technical rehearsals will run from 3:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays with two  Saturday tech rehearsals from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dinners will be provided during the weekday technical rehearsals that go until 7:30 p.m. 

Skills and Qualifications*: 

  • 3 years of experience working as a costume designer preferred 
  • 2 years of teaching experience at the high school age level preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a strong interest in working with adolescents 
  • Proficient with sewing machine, hand sewing, tailoring, and repurposing clothing

Compensation: $7,800 per production, $15,600 total for both productions
