NuVu College Counselor & Academic Support Specialist



NuVu, founded in Cambridge, MA in 2010, is an innovation school for students in grades 8-12 with a pedagogy that is based on the studio model. Our teachers (known as “coaches”) are a diverse and energetic team of creative educators with a range of backgrounds. In place of traditional courses, our curriculum consists of a series of 4-week multidisciplinary studios; students are immersed in a single studio at a time. NuVu’s four pillars–empathy, innovation, design, and impact–are central to all of the work that we do.



We are seeking a dynamic and passionate College Counselor and Academic Support Specialist to join our team. This individual will play a critical role in guiding and supporting students as they navigate their academic journeys and prepare for college. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of both traditional and non-traditional educational paths, a deep knowledge of college admissions processes, a passion for mentoring young people, and experience in tutoring.



  • Build strong relationships with students and families to understand their college goals and aspirations.
  • Provide individualized college counseling to students, including guidance on college selection, application strategies, essay development, interview preparation and financial aid applications.
  • Assist students in developing a balanced and competitive college list.
  • Build and maintain relationships with college admissions representatives to advocate for NuVu students and facilitate their successful transition to higher education.
  • Stay up-to-date on college admission trends and best practices.
  • Communicate with college admissions offices to advocate for students and highlight our schools unique and innovative education model.
  • Build strong relationships with families and maintain open communication regarding student progress and college planning.
  • Address any concerns or questions families may have about the college application process.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of college readiness workshops and seminars.



  • Provide guidance and resources for students enrolled in supplemental online coursework to ensure they are making satisfactory progress and meeting their academic goals.
  • Collaborate with studio coaches to explore opportunities for integrating academic content into project-based learning experiences.
  • Advise students on course selection to ensure they meet college admission requirements.
  • Communicate with the organizations delivering the course content.
  • Provide individualized sessions in core subjects (Mathematics, English, Science, History, etc.) to students who need additional support.
  • Assess students’ learning needs and create personalized learning plans to address their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Clarify concepts, review class material, and assist with homework assignments and exam preparation.
  • Communicate with outside course providers and independent tutors to keep updated on each student’s progress.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and areas for improvement.
  • Conduct regular meetings with students and families to discuss academic goals, course selection, and college options.
  • Coordinate standardized testing accommodations for students.
  • Participate in school events and activities as needed.



An ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in academic tutoring or teaching, ideally in a high school or college setting.
  • Knowledge of college admissions processes and requirements.
  • Ability to build rapport with students and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Passion for supporting students in their academic and personal growth.
  • Excellent skills in communication and collaboration.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic school environment and respond to situations with professionalism and empathy.
  • Genuine joy around working with adolescents in a highly creative and adaptive environment.


Note: This position may be split into two separate part-time roles (Academic Tutor and College Counselor) depending on the candidate pool and budget.We encourage applicants with a strong background in either academic tutoring or college counseling to apply.

Salary range: $75,000-$82,000, depending on experience
