Reports to: Lower School Director

Job Summary: 

BB&N is seeking a passionate and dedicated Music Director to collaborate with the Drama Director/Choreographer in leading the annual 6th-grade musical production. This year’s production is Shrek Jr., and the Music Director will be responsible for teaching and preparing 60 students using the Broadway Jr. script and supporting soundtracks. This role includes planning, rehearsing, and preparing for the performance, with an emphasis on fostering students’ musical growth and confidence. The ideal candidate will inspire and guide a cast of students in achieving a successful and enjoyable production experience.

Commitment/Schedule:

  • Start Date: January 21(audition week)

  • End Date: May 1 (final performance)

  • Rehearsal Schedule:

    • Tuesdays and Thursdays: 8:10–9:10 AM

    • Wednesdays: 1:00–2:00 PM

  • Extra Rehearsals:

    • April 5

    • April 11

    • April 27-29

  • Break: Two weeks off in March (aligned with the school calendar).

  • Show Dates: April 30 and May 1

Skills and Competencies:

The ideal candidate should have a minimum of three years of teaching experience at the elementary or middle school level and an understanding of cognitive and social development for children at this age. A Master’s degree in music education is preferred.

In addition, the candidate should demonstrate:

  • Strong background in music education, vocal coaching, or related fields.

  • Experience working with middle school students in a performance setting.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills.

  • A positive and encouraging demeanor to inspire student performers.

  • Familiarity with Google Classroom for sharing resources, schedules, and communications with students is preferred.

  • Ability to play piano is preferred, but not required

Essential Functions and Key Objectives:

  • Musical Preparation:

    • Collaborate with the Drama Director/Choreographer to plan and execute rehearsals, ensuring seamless integration of music, choreography, and blocking.

    • Teach music, including vocal parts and ensemble numbers, to a cast of 60 students, utilizing Broadway Jr. scripts and soundtracks.

  • Rehearsal Support:

    • Lead rehearsals, conduct vocal warm-ups, and prepare students for singing and performance.

    • Provide feedback and support to help students build confidence and refine their performance skills.

  • Performance Preparation:

    • Assist in preparing students for the final performance, including running music for dress rehearsals and operating the soundtrack for the production

    • Collaborate with production staff, such as sound technicians, during tech week to ensure musical and technical elements are aligned.

  • Communication & Coordination:

    • Maintain clear communication with the Drama Director/Choreographer, cast, and school administration through email and Google classroom

    • Foster an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages participation and enthusiasm.

  • Administrative Duties:

    • Attend all rehearsals and meetings, and assist with logistical tasks such as organizing sheet music and supporting the rehearsal schedule.
