About You

You are an experienced upper and/or middle school teacher who seeks to share your love of Latin (and possibly Spanish, and/or French) with others. Being a highly energetic and productive self-starter, you demonstrate a love of teaching and thorough command of the culture, language, and subject matter. You have excellent organizational and relationship building skills, are adept at guiding students in their classroom and extracurricular pursuits. You enjoy the rhythm and energy of an independent day school and demonstrate integrity, humor, and sound judgment in everything you do.

To be successful in this role, you must be able to:

  • Create a classroom environment that develops in each student’s awareness and appreciation for the richness of traditional and contemporary languages and culture through the study of literature, current events, and primary sources.
  • Teach Latin at all levels, from introductory to AP, with the ability and flexibility to teach a section or two of Spanish and/or French
  • Prepare and deliver lectures to students on topics outlined in the school curriculum.
  • Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, and papers.
  • Compile, administer, and grade examinations.
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  • Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with School policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
  • Act as an advisor to students and participate in campus and community events.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree highly preferred in subject area
  • At least three years of full-time teaching experience students
  • Previous leadership experience is preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Demonstrated knowledge in teaching principles, theories, methods, behavior management techniques, and conflict resolution strategies
  • Understanding of the academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of upper school students
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, and conduct comprehensive lesson plans and instruction
  • Ability to provide a motivating and engaging learning environment
  • History of continued education or professional development in general education or assigned subject area(s) through in-service training programs or independent studies
  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities and assignments
