Seeks

Middle School Physical Education Teacher/Coach

(Start Date August 23, 2024)

Lesley Ellis, an independent preschool-grade 8 school, seeks experienced physical education teacher and coach candidates who are adept at providing a positive, engaging, and fun learning environment for students by developing curriculum and planning lessons and activities that are consistent with the middle school goals in physical education and aligned with the school’s philosophy and mission

Candidates should be able to foster and maintain student engagement. We are looking for an individual who will bring expertise and enthusiasm to teaching, have the desire to work closely with colleagues to ensure an engaging and positive experience, and have a strong commitment to an anti-bias approach.

Respecting and embracing differences has been at the core of a Lesley Ellis education since the school’s early days. Our anti-bias curriculum is rooted in a developmental model of learning that engages children’s innate desire to observe, question, consider, and eventually think deeply about complex interpersonal and societal issues. In 2005, we received the Leading Edge Award for Equity and Justice from the National Association of Independent Schools, and we continue to learn and work against systems of injustice, including racism, by practicing behavior that demonstrates appreciation for multiple perspectives and engaging in conversations and actions that confront bias at all developmental levels.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Implement an innovative, creative, and developmentally appropriate curriculum for students in grades 5 – 8.
  2.  Teach PE classes and coach after school interscholastic sports (soccer, basketball, cross country)
  3. Provide a learning environment that will help children become skillful movers.
  4. Design, plan and implement lessons that support all levels of physical abilities.
  5. Schedule practices, games, and referees for interscholastic sports.
  6. Communicate regularly with parents of after school athletes.
  7. Work in close collaboration with other faculty and staff.
  8. Plan and implement annual Field Day
  9. Prepare written progress reports at least twice a year.
  10. Demonstrate respect for diversity among faculty and students and promote an environment that values diversity and social justice.
  11. Engage in professional development, collegial conversations, and collaborative curriculum building, to support an inclusive, anti-racist and anti-bias school environment.
  12. Attend all-school events and faculty meetings, as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • B.A. or M.A. in physical education
  • Experience with middle school students
  • Commitment to actively work toward an inclusive, antiracist and anti-bias school environment

School year position. Competitive salary.
