Middle School Music Teacher

Seeking a full-time, salaried music teacher. Reports to the Middle School Director.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Teach music classes to 5th-8th graders that are performance-focused

  • Serve as an advisor

  • Lead or accompany music electives such as chorus or musical theater

  • Lead two self-designed activities open to 5th-8th graders

  • Apply practices in the classroom and other settings that foster equity, inclusion, and belonging among Thayer Academy community members

  • Engage in ongoing professional development

  • Lead one-afternoon program in the arts for one or more seasons (preferred) or coach an afternoon sport.



  • Experience with and ability to motivate students to engage in the music program

  • A bachelor’s degree required, Masters (or higher) preferred in Education, Music, or a related field

  • 4-8 years of k-12 teaching experience (in Middle School preferred)

  • Ability to effectively work with middle schoolers and desire to build relationships

  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in the classroom, in curriculum, and in relationships with members of the school community

  • Previous experience and ability to independently  work with technology and audio equipment in an educational setting

  • Willingness to work on a team in a collaborative department

  • Ability to communicate and listen effectively with students and families

  • Curriculum design and assessment experience in the field of music

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading a chorus or leading musical theater

  • Experience as an accompanist

Thayer Academy seeks an experienced and collaborative Middle School music teacher and advisor. Teaching in a brand new state-of-the-art music suite that includes a music room, ensemble room, and audio recording lab, this educator will have the opportunity to share their vision for Thayer’s music program by partnering with members of the IDEA (Innovate, Design, and Explore Art) department in the development of an innovative Middle School music curriculum.

Goals for the future of music at Thayer include fostering a love for choral music, offering students exposure to practice and performance in an instrumental ensemble setting, and digital music production.
