Middle School Hale Learning Center Director

Seeking a full time, salaried position to lead our Middle School Hale Learning Center and provide academic support for students, particularly those with language-based learning differences, communicate and collaborate with teachers regarding best teaching practices, and partner with families to liaison between family, evaluators, and school. Reports to the Middle School Director and Hale Learning Center Director.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, coordinate, and supervise on-campus academic support of students with learning differences in grades 5-8
  • Provide direct support to students through one-on-one sessions and/or small groups setting including before and after school
  • Communicate with teachers of these students regarding approaches that should be utilized in the classroom setting, and provide push-in support through observation and teaching collaboration when appropriate
  • Teach executive functioning and learning skills for all 5th graders and 6th
  • Collaborate with Middle School Counselor to support families in the process of neuro-psychological testing for identified students for the purposes of reviewing neuro-psych evaluations
  • Create Academic Support Plans for students with educational testing; distribute and educate faculty on these plans, and continue to monitor throughout their Middle School Years
  • Lead faculty and parent education programs to support students with diverse learning styles, dyslexia, or other challenges
  • Serve as a school representative to coordinate testing with outside providers
  • Coordinate and help provide accommodations for standardized testing programs
  • Participate in the admissions process reviewing applicants with a variety of learning profiles
  • Lead Summer Study Skills program for newly admitted students
  • Supervise and support the Middle School HLC teacher
  • Lead and facilitate biweekly student support meetings with HLC staff, Middle School counselor, Middle school Director and Academic Dean
  • Serve as a member of the MS Admin team, and a member of the student support team
  • Attend department meetings as necessary to support projects
  • Apply practices in classroom and other settings that foster equity, inclusion, and belonging among Thayer Academy community members
  • Engage in ongoing professional development

Qualifications

  • A Masters (or higher) in Special Education or related field (i.e. reading) with particular strengths in supporting students with language-based learning differences
  • 5 years’ experience working in an educational setting with students with learning differences, familiarity with IEPs, educational/ neuropsychological testing, and familiarity with differentiated instruction and other methodologies
  • Strong organizational skills and experience developing, implementing, and coordinating academic support for a broad range of students across middle or upper school programs or related field
  • Passion for working with middle schoolers, and desire to build relationships
  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in the classroom, in curriculum, and in relationships with members of the school community
  • High level of comfort and experience with technology in an educational setting
  • Willingness to work on a team in a collaborative department
  • Ability to communicate and listen effectively with students and families

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience co-teaching
  • Experience with differentiated instruction and leading professional development
