The Sage School is looking for an engaging, creative, and adaptable long-term substitute for parental leave coverage in our humanities department to teach 6th through 8th grade courses in our accelerated curriculum. Our humanities program is committed to interdisciplinary learning, which combines history and English. As an English teacher, the instructor will work closely with the Upper School humanities team, executing pre-determined units in writing/research and creative writing/poetry. The position would also include project-based learning, Socratic seminars, grammar and vocabulary curriculum, debate, expository writing, and adaptive independent work.

  • Use the curriculum to advance the character, social, and emotional growth of our students.
  • Continuously assess student understanding and set goals with students for ongoing growth.
  • Monitor progress of skills development aligned with our curriculum maps.
  • Communicate student progress through written reports, family conferences, and ongoing conversations with families.
  • Collaborate with the student support team to meet a variety of learning styles and needs.
  • Cover lunch and recess duty as assigned, helping to build community in less formal settings.
  • Serve as interim co-advisor to approximately 10 seventh-grade students, as well as interim faculty leader of the Sage Periodical Club.
  • Maintain a sense of humor, flexibility, and compassion.
  • Possess strong writing and communication skills, with confidence in sharing student progress both in writing and in person.

Bachelor’s degree required; additional advanced study is valued but not essential. This is a substitute parental leave position to begin in late-February or early-March (depending on applicant availability) through June 2026.
