Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart is seeking a passionate and dedicated Middle School English Teacher to join our faculty. The ideal candidate will inspire a love for literature, writing, and critical thinking in students while developing their communication skills. This position requires a versatile educator who is capable of teaching students in grades 5-8 serving in a highly relational learning environment.
Position Description:
- Teach four sections of middle school English.
- Develop engaging lessons focused on English language arts, including reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary development.
- Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about student progress and classroom activities.
- Partner with colleagues to enrich humanities learning experiences and contribute actively to a team-based culture of collegiality.
- Collaborate in designing experiential and interdisciplinary learning opportunities to take learning beyond the confines of the English classroom.
- Exhibit a strong commitment to lifelong learning by engaging in professional development opportunities.
- Participate actively in the life of the wider school community by serving as an advisor for up to six students, a moderator for a grade level, and a moderator for a co-curricular student activity; participating in weekly community time (announcements, chapel, class meeting); attending occasional evening and weekend events; and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field required (advanced degree preferred).
- Minimum of three years of middle school English teaching experience.
- Exceptional capabilities in student engagement and support.
- Commitment to inclusive, student-centered learning approaches.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Alignment with the Sacred Heart educational mission to educate the whole child.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- This role requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment.
- It demands mobility for tasks such as reaching, holding, touching, pushing, and lifting.
- The job typically involves 25% sitting, 25% walking, and 50% standing, performed in a generally hazard-free environment with minimal temperature variations.
- Depending on the classroom assignment, the role may require relocating between classrooms throughout the day, including ascending and descending stairs.
- Occasionally, extended hours are necessary, including after school, evenings, and weekends.
- Newton Country Day’s campus consists of multiple buildings, playing fields, and outdoor learning spaces, connected by external walkways and stairs. This position requires moving between these areas in all weather conditions.
