Summary of Position: 

The Middle School Dean of Teaching and Learning is an instructional leader who champions the work of teachers and ensures an innovative, equitable, and inclusive academic program through close collaboration with a team of roughly thirty middle school faculty.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate pedagogical and programmatic innovation.
  • Support instructional and curricular initiatives.
  • Assess and identify curriculum development priorities and share best educational practices and research with faculty.
  • Facilitate faculty growth and goal setting.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to teachers in research-based instructional strategies, curriculum planning, assessment, classroom management, differentiated instruction and identity-safe classrooms.
  • Oversee new teacher mentoring program, including facilitation of biweekly individual support meetings with first year faculty, classroom observations, and pairing and support of first year teachers with experienced Middle School faculty mentors.
  • Support principal for recruitment and hiring of Middle School faculty and staff.
  • Plan and lead in-house professional development opportunities and facilitate external opportunities for faculty in support of individual professional and divisional growth.
  • Partner with learning specialist to provide professional development in support of our neurodiverse student population.
  • Collaborate with learning specialist to problem solve acute or immediate student learning difficulties, providing classroom strategies and determining allocation of resources to best meet student needs.
  • Serve as a member of the Middle School Student Support Team, Program Implementation Team, and Administrative Staff
  • Partner with Director of Equity and Inclusion to ensure cultural and curricular diversity in all academic areas.
  • Collaborate with technology specialist to identify tools and products to support student learning.
  • Oversee Teaching and Learning and Professional Development budget.
  • Develop and implement policies that support teacher efficacy and student success.
  • Partner with admissions to represent academic program to prospective families.
  • Lead parent/guardian events and workshops on middle school program and student supports.
  • Partner with the K-12 teaching and learning team to create opportunities for cross-divisional collaboration.
  • Teach one section of Common Ground.
