Math Specialist Teacher – Part Time

Acera is looking for a math educator to design and lead a math class for the 21/22 school year! Bring your highly collaborative spirit, and deep commitment to customizing students’ experiences to fit their needs to our school.

Acera’s enrichment programs (after school, summer, and vacation week camps) are open to the public, and our Education Innovation efforts are actively engaging in public school projects to support educational change. We also partner with organizations beyond our walls, creating programs rich in sciences, technology, engineering, creativity and arts. We seek to hire a math educator who can teach one section of math to a group of multi-grade gifted elementary school students. Depending on the instructor’s background and strengths, it could be a class of K-2 students, or a class of 3rd and 4th grade students. Either way, we are looking for someone who can challenge students and get them to approach math with joy, logic, and grit. These are students who are learning above grade level, which means there is freedom to include enrichment topics and topics outside of the standard curriculum. You should provide opportunities to creatively tackle new problems, to explore patterns and develop numeracy.
We have some other part-time positions open, and depending on instructor interest and availability, we might want to create a position that includes a second math class, or various other elective and STEM classes.
Math Block Teacher Expectations:
- Provide an interesting math experience for the students, exploring topics outside of the standard curriculum, as well as creative ways to approach standard material.
- Create an environment where students can engage in creative problem solving, and come up with their own conjectures and methods. Use hands-on activities as a starting point for learning. Manage a class where students have a wide range of knowledge through the use of low-floor high-ceiling tasks.
- Customize and/or invent and extend curriculum, leveraging programs that best suit your group (You Cubed and Mathematical Mindsets; Beast Academy; Singapore Math; other curricula). Research and plan to find the best strategies for your group, and acquire curricula and tools needed.
- Differentiate instruction, enabling each student to learn at a rate and in a style that fits each child and best and maximizes their potential. Continuously adapt classroom focus and strategies to accommodate for each student’s needs.
- A key expectation is that learning goals will be framed, strategies planned, implemented, and revised based upon student interest and need, and that appropriate assessment will be embedded so that students can mark their own progress.
- Create and adapt individualized learning goals to drive learning approaches and focus for each student throughout the year. Share these with the student’s core teacher for inclusion in the written Individualized Learning Plan.
- Escalate issues and needs as soon as possible. If you are struggling to meet students’ needs and require help, it is a sign of strength and confidence to ask for help.
- Communicate learning goals and strategies to Acera administrators, other math block teachers, core teachers and parents through open exchanges, brief group email updates to your math block group parents once per month, as comments on narrative report cards twice per year, and during parent conferences (planned and impromptu)
- Support students who are ready to leap ahead of others. Scaffold a transition to another group or establish an independent sub group as needed.
Write Progress Report Comments: We do not assign grades at Acera. Instead, we write student comments for our progress reports twice a year. Comments give parents insight into mastery level as well as learning styles. It is expected that all teachers follow the comment writing and editing timeline.
Attend Conferences when appropriate. You can be included in parent conferences alongside with the core classroom teacher for your math students or you may initiate and/or respond to parent requests for individual math conferences. Confer with each of your students’ core teacher(s) to mutually determine whether conference participation or an individual math conference makes sense.
- Experience teaching math.
- A willingness to teach in-person.
- In-depth understanding of mathematics, as a creative endeavor and as a way of thinking, not simply as a list of procedures. Willingness to explore mathematical ideas with young minds.
- Experience in employing a variety of pedagogical approaches for different learning styles.
- Interest in using technology to enhance teaching and learning, depending on the grade and age. We prefer less technology use in the younger grades.
- Flexibility and a collaborative spirit.
