Walnut Hill School for the Arts has an immediate opening for an experienced Maintenance Technician to join the facilities team and assist with the general maintenance and upkeep of school buildings, grounds, and facilities.

This position works with faculty, staff, and students to proactively assess and rectify issues relating to the overall physical plant and functioning of the school. The ideal candidate possesses strong carpentry and HVAC and plumbing skills and experience.

Regular hours are 40 hours per week, with overtime as needed and rotating on-call responsibilities (approximately one week per month). This is a great opportunity to join a welcoming school community and facilities team!

Responsibilities:

Perform routine and general maintenance, repairs, and operations of all building systems and services throughout campus, including but not limited to:

  • Carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, gasses, steam, finishes, electrical, snow removal, and refuse removal;

  • Emergency response to and prevention of safety hazards;

  • Preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles;

  • Set-ups for events & performances as needed;

  • Maintain facilities shop;

  • Assist with other facilities department coverage as needed (housekeeping, mailroom, transportation);

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Requirements:

  • 3+ years experience in facilities,  maintenance, or related field; HVAC/Plumbing experience preferred;

  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate power and hand tools, equipment, vertical lift, ladders, dollies, and other basic maintenance, loading, and unloading equipment;

  • Ability to assess a situation and diagnose issues and escalate as needed;

  • Excellent decision-making skills;

  • Knowledge of safety codes, regulations, and procedures;

  • Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and follow safety laws;

  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to work with a wide range of people;

  • Effective written and oral communication skills; proficient computer skills;

  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community and to learning about and practicing anti-racist work;

  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a changing, fast-paced environment;

  • Hold or obtain special licenses and certifications as needed; and

  • Current driver’s license is required.

Physical Demands

Physical demands include dexterity for electrical, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, and supply operation including but not limited to using lawn and maintenance vehicles, electrical equipment, power and hand tools, driving, writing, typing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, office machinery, copy machine, fax machine, and printers. Walking, ascending/descending stairs and ladders, stooping, bending, reaching, carrying, lifting, pushing/pulling, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common. Ability to move continuously during work hours and ability to lift, push/pull and/or carry up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools is required. Work environment may include extreme temperatures both inside and outside, precipitation due to the New England weather, and machinery noise. Proper use of applicable personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
