Lower School Math Specialist

Job Summary: Supports the fundamental educational mission of the school by teaching Math in a variety of settings to students in Grades Pre-K through Five.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties to be assigned): 

    • Plans, organizes, and implements math lessons that support students in one-on-one settings as well as in small groups, collaborating closely with Lower School classroom teachers 
    • Provides math enrichment to Lower School students in a variety of settings, allowing students that need additional challenge an opportunity to engage with math concepts in a sophisticated way
    • Provides one-on-one remediation to Lower School students identified as needing additional support in math 
    • Upon the request of a lead teacher or administrator, observes students in their math class, reads anecdotal records and/or testing results, and discusses findings to best support individual student needs 
    • Performs a mathematics evaluation of a diagnostic and prescriptive nature upon request of a lead teacher or administrator and provides a post-assessment report to parents, Head of Lower School, and lead teacher
    • Plans lessons for students, tailoring instruction to meet individual student needs and keeping in line with the grade-level scope and sequence
    • Supports Lower School teachers with relevant resources and materials to supplement or enhance the Math in Focus curriculum in the classroom; supports teachers to maintain continuity of curriculum throughout the Lower School
    • Participates in parent meetings when appropriate 
    • Develops positive relationships with children and their parents
  • Writes narrative reports on students receiving regular one-on-one tutorial sessions and conducts formal parent-teacher conferences two times per year 
  • Maintains verbal and written communication with parents using a variety of modes including technology
  • Participates in pertinent department, division, and all-employee meetings
  • Plans for professional development, keeping abreast of current research and practices in math, child development, and equity, justice, and diversity issues

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited four-year college or university
  • 3 or more years as a Lower School teacher 
  • Experience with a balanced mathematics program, preferably the Math in Focus program 
  • Ability to teach mathematics across all Lower School grade levels 
  • Deep and broad understanding of mathematical content 


  • Ability to effectively listen, respond, and present information to students, parents, school employees, and the general public
  • Ability to project a positive and professional image at all times
  • Proficient writer


  • Exhibits strong organizational skills, demonstrates innovative thinking and takes initiative
  • Has knowledge of the current curricular and instructional practice
  • Has knowledge of and ability to use technology in support of teaching
