
Lower School Literacy Specialist
Brimmer and May School, Chestnut Hill, MA
Brimmer and May, a gender inclusive independent day school in Chestnut Hill, MA, seeks a full-time Lower School Reading Specialist for the 2025-2026 school year. The reading specialist will work in collaboration with classroom teachers and the Lower School Director of Academic Services to ensure a rich and appropriate learning experience that meets the mission of the school, as well as provide extra support and enrichment for students to be successful in literacy.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities:
• Observe classes and collaborate with teachers to improve pedagogy to support all learners.
• Meet with grade level teams to assist in the implementation of the literacy curriculum.
• Attend parent meetings to discuss student progress, areas of challenge, and strategies used.
• Communicate regularly and effectively with parents, both orally and in writing.
• Serve as a resource for professional materials and instructional strategies.
• Assist teachers in developing curriculum-based assessments and instruction.
• Provide direct small-group instruction as needed and work with teachers to implement additional supports in the classroom.
• Work with teachers and the Director of Teaching and Learning to evaluate the existing program and promote opportunities to supplement current practices.
• Participate in the planning of professional development to promote best practices in instruction and assessment.
• Monitor and review student data including standardized testing.
• Attend weekly Lower School Meetings.
• Participate in the full life of the Lower School and the larger school community.
General Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred in Literacy and/or specialized training in a structured literacy approach.
• Minimum of 5 years teaching experience at the elementary level.
• Depth of understanding in all aspects of literacy development, evidenced-based practices, and current trends in elementary literacy education, with a focus on student development in grades PreK through 5.
• Experience implementing multi-sensory instructional methods to accelerate literacy achievement.
• Demonstrated strength in phonological awareness, decoding, encoding, and fluency instruction.
• Knowledge of strategies for supporting students with Executive Function skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as attention to detail.
• Punctuality, dependability, and adherence to all personnel policies, procedures, and rules contained in the Brimmer and May Faculty and Staff Handbooks.
