Nantucket Lighthouse School is seeking a Elementary Classroom Teacher for the 2024-25 school year


Mission and History:

Founded in 2000, the Nantucket Lighthouse School (NLS) is an independent school serving Nantucket children, 2.9-years-old through 6th grade. Nantucket Lighthouse School is a community of children, families, and educators that embodies the joy of learning. Through an integrated curriculum of literacy, math, science, history, and creative and performing arts, students develop critical thinking skills. Through compassionate teaching and social-emotional learning, students develop a sense of respect and responsibility for themselves, others, and their community.


The Position:

We are looking for creative, dynamic, and experienced educators for the 2024-25 school year.


The ideal candidates have a solid understanding of early childhood and/or elementary education and development, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and experience working with a range of abilities and teaching foundational reading skills. We look forward to hiring creative and multi-dimensional teachers whose personal and professional characteristics will bring energy and new perspectives to our community.



  1. Establish and maintain a healthy and trusting learning environment, fostering safe, nurturing relationships with students while supporting the social, emotional, and academic life of each child.


  1. Teach developmentally appropriate, project-based social studies and science core units that incorporate the arts (visual, music, drama), literacy (reading, writing, phonics), handwork (weaving, stitching), mathematics, and experiential/hands-on learning through ongoing projects and weekly field trips with various members of the Nantucket community. To supplement this interdisciplinary approach, early grade teachers will also instruct students using an explicit phonics curriculum and Bridges in Mathematics.


  1. Create and plan lessons and activities encouraging enthusiastic learning, intellectual

growth, social emotional learning, and social responsibility.


  1. Possess strong classroom management and problem-solving skills. Responsive Classroom training is encouraged.


  1. Evaluate students throughout the year utilizing different assessment tools to monitor

growth and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners.


  1. Communicate about student progress, write reports and newsletters, hold parent

conferences including Back to School Night, and meet with administrators and other

faculty to support the needs of all stakeholders.


  1. Engage in community events throughout the year, sometimes at night and on the

weekends, including admissions events and the annual Yuletide Fair.


  1. Collaborate with colleagues, attend weekly faculty and/or division meetings, and IEP



  1. Engage in goal setting and increase knowledge of educational innovations through professional development, including the School’s Educational Speaker Series.

Salary and Term:

2024-2025 school year: beginning August 26, 2024 and ending June 13, 2025

Salary is commensurate with experience and education.
