Library Access Services Coordinator

This is a full-time, benefited 12-month position. Schedule is M-F (M/T 9a-5p, W/TH/F 1:30p-9:30p).

Position Purpose

Reporting to the Associate Director of the Library, the Access Services Coordinator is responsible for providing high quality, user-focused services to library users. Responsible for the coordination of the daily operations of library access services including borrowing, stacks maintenance, data collection, and student employee program. Provide public service and participate in a team-oriented work environment.

Job Responsibilities

  •  Develop and maintain circulation operations for the library including borrowing, renewals, returns, damaged items, holds, and course reserves. Collaborate with systems librarian for the smooth operation of patron loads, notices, and reporting; produce annual statistics and reports.
  • Provide a welcoming and collegial environment at the service desk and throughout the library, supporting, encouraging, and providing boundaries for our high school students. Oversee patron accounts, resolve disputes with borrowers regarding fines and overdue items and authorize fine waivers or reductions, as judged to be appropriate and in collaboration with finance and other offices.
  • Coordinate library student work program. Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit, hire, train and supervise student workers. Verify and approve student workers’ biweekly time records. Schedule student workers for circulation desk coverage and develop and coordinate projects for them in other areas of the library during the school year and during summer session.
  • Serve regular shifts at the service desk. Answer patron questions and public enquiries; greet and direct building visitors; refer questions as needed. Serve as a team lead to ensure communication and consistency between the daytime and the evenings and weekends, as well as for part-time and on-call staff.
  •  Maintain the circulating collections, including supervision of shelving and shifting of materials as needed. Participate in weeding projects, as needed by librarian liaisons.
  •  Manage the Book Exchange (a free, used-book program) including collecting items at key points in the year and directing student workers to integrate donations annually.
  • Seek out professional development opportunities, especially to remain current on trends and service ideas in access services. Other duties as assigned.
  •  Work with a high level of independence and autonomy, and exercise a high degree of initiative, influence, and judgment in decisions impacting staff and department operations

Direct: Academic year student workers and summer library assistants — academic year students in part-time temporary regular staff positions.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required

Experience 

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with diverse populations, as evidenced by a minimum of one year’s experience in a public-facing role, showcasing communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Library experience desirable. Experience with WMS or another automated circulation system preferred.
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting preferred.

  • Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and will require the ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objects as well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.

  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example using a keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken and written word.
  • Ability to see with normal parameters.
  • Ability to use a visual display terminal with continuous wrist movement on a keyboard.
  • Ability to hear within normal range
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 40lbs without assistance.
