Cushing Academy is eager to find an experienced learning specialist who is ready to contribute to our well-established Academic Support Program. An integrated part of teaching and learning at the Academy, the Academic Support Program was established nearly 50 years ago and serves a wide range of students. Student learning profiles may include (1) mild to moderate learning disabilities (e.g. dyslexia, dysgraphia), (2) ADHD/executive functioning deficits, and/or (3) academic anxiety. Along with five other full-time learning specialists, the ideal candidate will carry a caseload of five classes, representing a combination of individual (1:1) and small group (4:1) classes. Utilizing a strengths-based coaching model and tapping into the wide range of resources available in the boarding school environment, the ideal candidate will embrace neurodiversity and brain-based research to integrate best practices and advance effective methods within the department and the broader school community. Familiarity with independent high schools is necessary, and boarding school experience is particularly helpful.
Successful candidates will have highly effective verbal and written communication skills and an exceptional ability to develop and maintain positive and healthy relationships with a diverse range of adolescents. Candidates should demonstrate an ongoing commitment to creating and supporting an inclusive educational environment, and a willingness to examine their own educational practices through an anti-oppression and anti-racist framework. Housing is provided with associated residential life duties. Boarding school faculty provide leadership for afternoon activities that match experience and interest. Master’s degree in a relevant field is required.
