Position Overview:
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Lead Humanities Teacher to join our team and spearhead the humanities curriculum for 9th-grade students. The Lead Humanities Teacher will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing engaging, interdisciplinary lessons that leverage students’ enthusiasm for sports to deepen their understanding of history, literature, geography, and other humanities subjects. This is an exempt position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Development: Work with Principal to design and develop a comprehensive humanities curriculum that aligns with state standards and reflects the unique ethos of Urban Achievers School. Integrate sports-related themes, literature, case studies, and examples into lesson plans to make content relevant and engaging for students.
- Use of Technology: Work with Principal to develop and streamline an effective hybrid classroom experience such that athletes may take part in classes without interruption when traveling. Foreground effective, safe, and appropriate use of AI and other technologies. Employ innovative teaching strategies, instructional technologies, and multimedia resources to enhance the learning experience and cater to diverse learning styles.
- Instructional Delivery: Deliver dynamic and interactive lessons that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities. Foster critical thinking, analytical skills, and empathy through discussions, debates, projects, and hands-on activities.
- Assessment and Feedback: Implement various formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback. In the spring, shape a summer learning plan for each student to address student’s specific challenges and to avoid learning loss during the summer basketball session.
- Teacher Assessment: Engage enthusiastically with the Principal to develop curriculum and teaching methods on which to found the Urban Achievers learning experience. Be receptive to classroom observations to feed ongoing conversations about teaching methods and delivery, and be ready to implement methods that might not be familiar.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with other teachers, coaches, and staff members to create interdisciplinary learning experiences and promote a cohesive school culture. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching practices and stay abreast of educational trends.
- Student Support: Build meaningful relationships with students, serving as a mentor and advocate for their academic and personal growth. Provide individualized support and intervention as needed to ensure all students thrive academically.
- Parent and Community Engagement: Communicate regularly with parents/guardians to share updates on student progress, solicit feedback, and foster a strong home-school partnership. Participate in school events, sports competitions, and community outreach initiatives to promote Urban Achievers School and its mission.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Humanities, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Prior teaching experience, preferably at the high school level.
- Strong knowledge of humanities subjects, including history, literature, geography, and social studies.
- Passion for sports and understanding of how to leverage sports culture to enhance education.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and support diverse learners.
- Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
