POSITION SUMMARY:

A JCDS teacher models the core values of a JCDS education: integrity, perseverance/resiliency, curiosity, multiple perspectives/empathy, problem solving, reflection and evidence, and creates a student-centered, rigorous, play-infused learning environment for students.

Candidates for this position should demonstrate a passion for working collaboratively with teachers and for teaching elementary school children, and should possess a deep understanding of how to run an academic program that meets the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of a range of elementary-aged children. The candidate should possess excellent communication, organization and class management skills.

This position will support Lower School faculty in understanding developmental math expectations, standards-aligned instruction, and how to teach the Savvas Investigations Math curriculum. This position will also coach faculty in these grades in supporting the transition between learning to read and reading to learn, including comprehension and literary analysis skills, as well as writing and response to literature communication skills.  Familiarity with the Fundations and EmPower curricula is preferred.  The person in this role will support literature circles, whole-class curriculum implementation, and will be knowledgeable about data-driven instructional strategies that are research based and pedagogically aligned with the school’s mission and values.  In both subject areas, the person in this role is also responsible for providing whole-cohort professional development, as well as for running individual coaching cycles, including observation, debrief, and modeling.

 

Responsibilities:

Coaching

  • Collaborate with teachers to identify goals around teaching literacy and math
  • Implement a coaching cycle including observations, debriefs, identifying next steps, and occasional modeling
  • Utilize a collaborative log to record instructional priorities, next steps, and observational notes

Professional Development

  • In partnership with the Director of Learning and Teaching, identify whole-cohort pedagogical priorities over a 1-3 year time period
  • Design and implement whole-cohort professional development rooted in achieving those priorities
  • Work with individual teachers and grade level bands to support the implementation of professional development learning targets is occurring within classrooms
  • Collaborate with the Middle School Math Coach and Director of Learning and Teaching to determine K-8 instructional priorities and collaboratively plan and facilitate professional development for all math teachers
