Position Overview and Responsibilities

The Instructional Coach (Coach) is a staff position within the Teaching and Learning Department. The Coach is focused on promoting high quality, mission based, culturally responsive teaching and learning in a technology rich environment at St. John’s Prep. The Coach supports experienced faculty and new faculty through the Induction Program. The Coach provides one-to-one and small group coaching, designs and leads high quality workshops and trainings, and collaborates with teachers in the creation of lessons and projects using academic materials, technology, and multimedia resources. The Coach should be committed to growth as a culturally responsive educator and to help support others with their growth in this area. The Coach collaborates and communicates with the Teaching and Learning Team, Principal’s Leadership Team, Committee for Professional Learning, Department Chairs, Curriculum Coordinators, Team Leaders, and others who support faculty learning and growth. 


Responsibilities include:

  • Meet with the Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning and other Instructional Coaches regularly to assess instructional and technology needs of the school community and recommend appropriate strategies, programs, and resources.
  • Provide customized and differentiated workshops and training for faculty, students, parents, and staff based on research and feedback from faculty and staff, PLT priorities, and other needs that arise.
  • Support faculty with the design and implementation of assignments, lessons, projects, and assessments to encourage collaborative, active, and technology-rich learning experiences. 
  • Support faculty with classroom management strategies that prioritize student engagement, collaborative learning, and culturally responsive teaching in a technology rich environment.
  • Serve as a coach to teachers new to St. John’s Prep through the Induction Program. Assist with the planning and running of Induction Meetings, provide helpful information about upcoming schedules and events on campus, observe classes and provide professional feedback, co-create strategies to help with efficient and effective lesson planning and correcting, and support the integration of new faculty into the SJP community.
  • Create digital and paper resources designed to help faculty, staff, parents, and students of St. John’s Prep to navigate and use the hardware, software, and online services associated with the school community.
  • Arrange for classroom observation and peer observation opportunities for faculty members to learn from coaching feedback and from watching colleagues teach. 
  • Assist students in classrooms, computer labs and the library with academic tasks and digital apps/resources as needed.
  • Provide basic on demand troubleshooting of hardware and software problems for faculty and students while also referring more complex issues to the Information Services Team.  
  • Contribute to the selection and testing of new technology, online resources, web-based tools, and digital books. Selection and testing will be based on privacy and safety requirements, integration with SJP systems, and preventing redundancy with existing services.
  • Participate in conversations with digital resource providers and help with planning for annual education technology subscriptions and licenses.
  • Coaches may teach one class in their content area of classroom experience in grades 6 through 12.


Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree is desirable. Previous experience as a classroom teacher is required.
  • An understanding of and experience applying adult learning theory and adult learning models.
  • An understanding of child/adolescent development and experience applying student learning theory (pedagogy).
  • An understanding of appropriate, pedagogical, and culturally responsive uses of technology in the educational setting, particularly in a technology rich learning environment.  
  • Ability to effectively communicate with faculty regarding teaching strategies and technology use in oral, written, audio, video, and multimedia formats. 
  • Experience with and ability to effectively plan and carry out training sessions, both synchronous and asynchronous, for faculty regarding teaching strategies and technology integration.  
  • Some technology support experience is preferred.
  • Competency and experience with Apple devices and operating systems including MacBooks and iPads. 
  • Competency and experience with Google Workspace in professional and educational settings for creation, collaboration, and workflow. 
  • Competency and experience with Learning Management Systems and Student Information Systems.
  • Current knowledge of available and emerging technologies, especially with regard to educational resources, creative tools, and strategies for using them with students.


Physical Requirements:

  • Standing/sitting for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of equipment, etc.
  • Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
  • Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, play equipment, and perform first aid and CPR.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
