Faculty / Full-Time

The White Mountain School, Bethlehem, NH

SCIENCE TEACHER

The White Mountain School seeks a full-time Science teacher to begin duties on August 1, 2023.

WHO ARE YOU?

At your core, you know that learning can and must be both joyful and relational. Deeply curious and resilient, you are excited to ask questions and seek answers: How might competency-based learning promote more equitable and student-driven learning? How might we inspire students to increase what they see as possible within themselves? How might we care for and educate the whole student? You are an experiential, progressive educator — or someone with a willingness to learn. In fact, it is your willingness to learn that extends to all you do. You love challenges, thrive in collaborative environments, and balance the gravity and joy of working in a boarding school. You seek a deeply relational and intentionally small community where you will be encouraged and supported to bring your full self to all aspects of your work.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a college degree in a STEM field
  • Be able to teach a range of science offerings
  • Put the study of science both in historical and social context
  • Have a sense of humor and a high degree of flexibility

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

  • Teach a variety of courses in sciences, possibly including Biology, Chemistry, Physics and/or electives depending on background, interest, and experience
  • Coach or lead two of three seasons of co-curricular activities
  • Advise 5-6 students
  • Supervise one night of dorm duty per week and one weekend of dorm duty per five weeks, or equivalent
  • Teach two week-long Field Courses (immersive, place-based learning)
  • Room and board are provided

Purpose: Founded in 1886 and set in the beautiful White Mountains of northern New Hampshire, The White Mountain School is a gender-inclusive, college-preparatory boarding and day school for 120 students grades 9-12/PG. Our purpose remains true to the original focus of New England boarding schools: the development of mind, body, and spirit.

Equity and Inclusion: The White Mountain School aspires to create an inclusive community that is enriched by respect, understanding and shared values. We strive to have our faculty and curriculum reflect the diversity of our boarding population.

Our place in nature: Deeply committed to environmental sustainability, the school’s motto, “Lift thine eyes to the mountains” reflects our long held value in finding inspiration, peace and humility in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Curiosity: We teach students how to ask big questions and seek answers. Our classrooms are hands-on, inquiry-driven spaces where students learn about themselves, their community, and the broader world. Successful candidates will model lifelong learning.

Equal Opportunity EmployerAll faculty job applicants and all hired faculty will be treated with equal fairness and have the opportunity to excel without bias due to their race, ethnicity, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, physical ability, or protected veteran status.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Interested candidates should submit an email to WMShiring@whitemountain.org including their resume and answers to the questions below (in lieu of a cover letter.) Please answer four of the five questions in 100-150 words each.

  1. What about this job description resonated with you and why are you interested in The White Mountain School?
  2. In what ways has your previous work (or studies) demonstrated a commitment to equity and inclusion?
  3. What does student-driven inquiry mean to you, and why are you interested in a school committed to it?
  4. The work our teachers do in advising and in the dorm is often the most impactful work they do with students. As an educator, why do you believe this to be true?
  5. If you were encouraged and had permission to teach a course that is truly “outside of the box” in terms of what people expect to see in a high school, what would you teach and why?
