Touchstone seeks a classroom teacher for a combined 6th-8th grade class for the 2026-27 school year. This individual is a reflective, life-long learner passionate about place-based and thematic or project-based learning. This person deeply respects young learners and is committed to progressive education, eco-literacy, emergent and integrated curriculum, and nature-based education. This teacher would be responsible for a mixed level literacy program, mixed-level thematic studies (incorporating science, social studies and history) and 6th grade math. This position also requires that the teacher accompany the students on 3-5 day trips (once in the fall and once in the spring at a minimum). 

Touchstone Community School is a co-educational independent day school that enrolls approximately 75 students, ages 2.9 through 8th grade. It is located in Grafton, MA, with a five-acre island campus in Upton. Touchstone offers a progressive, hands-on environment, where a natural pace of development is respected and play, community, integrated curriculum, and social justice activism are emphasized.

An exemplary Touchstone teacher is one who is:

  • Dedicated to collaborating with colleagues and partnering with parents
  • Willing to learn and utilize Responsive Classroom and/or Collaborative Problem Solving
  • Experienced with writing workshop, genre studies, and Socratic approach to literacy
  • Experienced with teaching honest history using Facing History and Ourselves and/or Learning for Justice standards
  • Experienced with an inquiry and lab-based approach to teaching science
  • Passionate about outdoor-based education and eco-literacy
  • Able to develop integrated and thematic learning experiences
  • Familiar with using design thinking strategies for building empathy

Minimum Requirements:

  • Possession of an undergraduate degree, at minimum; Master’s degree, preferred
  • Previous teaching experience, at minimum; 5+ years experience, preferred
  • Experience in or understanding of progressive education
  • Commitment to anti-bias, anti-racist, and anti-homophobic education
  • Knowledgeable and appreciative of the developmental needs of 12-14 year olds and dedicated to supporting students’ individual academic, social, and emotional development

This is a full-time position and will pay $55-60,000 per year, plus benefits.
