Title:                   FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Mentor

Xaverian is an independent Catholic school for boys in grades 7-12, sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers. Located in Westwood, Massachusetts, this college-prep school welcomes students from approximately 90 communities across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Xaverian was established in 1963 and presently enrolls over 990 students.

General Expectations: Xaverian is seeking applications for a part-time, seasonal, FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Mentor. The ideal candidate will be a passionate and knowledgeable mentor to support and guide our robotics team during the competition season and off-season. The required hours are weekdays from 2:30 – 6:00 p.m. as well as some weekends for practices, competitions, and events (during the school year and summer). Some travel is required.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

• Guide and mentor students in designing, building, and programming a competitive robot to compete against other area schools in FIRST Tech Challenge competitions.
• Provide technical assistance in areas such as mechanical design, CAD, electronics, makerspace fabrication, and programming. Supervise students with use of some power tools.
• Encourage problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership development among team members.
• Ensure students follow safety guidelines and best practices in the workshop.
• Assist with outreach and efforts to support team sustainability.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

• Strong communication and leadership skills to mentor high school students.
• Willingness to work collaboratively to teach/encourage students on robot-building projects.
• Knowledge in the operation of a small set of power tools (e.g. Dremel, miter saw) and/or a willingness to learn and supervise safe power tool operation.
• Experience with robotics, engineering, CAD, makerspace fabrication and/or programming (in FTC, FRC, VEX, or similar programs) is preferred.
• Experience as a FIRST mentor, coach, or prior-participant is preferred.
• Prior experience working with high school students in an educational or extracurricular setting is preferred.
