English Teaching Intern

Starting in the 2022/2023 school year, the English department seeks an English intern committed to secondary education and interested in being part of a collaborative group of English teachers working with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community. 

 

This is a full-time, exempt, one year intern, Academic year (10 months) schedule, including one week prior to the beginning of school. 

This position provides aspiring teachers the opportunity to work closely with a mentor and other experienced faculty members across campus. Interns will gain experience teaching a wide range of texts from diverse authors and teaching writing in different genres. Enthusiasm for working with adolescents both inside and outside of the classroom is essential. Providing extra help, advising, working as dormitory faculty, and assisting with extracurricular activities are integral parts of the job.  
 

 While individual responsibilities will vary, the major job duties of all interns include the following:

  • Teaching: Interns will work with experienced faculty, co-teaching in the fall and working with increasing independence in winter and spring trimesters. Interns will observe and eventually facilitate student-centered discussions around a Harkness table with highly motivated students.
  • Cultural Competency: Interns are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life.
  • Residential Life: Interns generally live in campus housing and play a critical role in cultivating Exeter’s community-centered student dormitory life. Interns are generally responsible for one weekend per month and one to three nights of dormitory duty per week, depending on the dormitory size.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Interns are generally expected to participate in the school’s extracurricular activities (e.g. athletics, student clubs, community service, and the arts).

Additional Requirements

  1. A Bachelor’s degree or significant coursework in English or related fields and demonstrated interest in working with adolescents.
  2. Experience or interest in diversity or cultural competency education (conferences, seminars, in-service programs, coursework, independent study).
  3. Proof of authority to work in the United Stated, full time.
  4. Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  5. Clean Driving record.
  6. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical/health screening examination that may include a drug screening.
  7. COVID Vaccine Policy:  

    Phillips Exeter Academy requires all community members without a medical or religious exemption to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and remain up to date with COVID-19 vaccine boosters.
