The Governor’s Academy, the oldest boarding school in New England, inspires and engages inquisitive students in ninth through twelfth grade. Our 456-acre campus is located thirty miles north of Boston and five miles south of Newburyport, a classic New England coastal town. Govs has approximately 400 students and 210 employees.

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a full-time English teaching position, and the successful applicant will be able to teach literature across many genres and grades.  Additionally, English teachers at Governor’s are encouraged to create unique, intensive, semester-long classes to be added to the course catalog for juniors and seniors. Also, this position will include ongoing contact with and direct responsibility for the academic and social life of students on campus (in loco parentis) and will involve specific responsibilities that include coaching or other afternoon program involvement, possible residential life duty, and student advising. With Teaching Faculty status comes the expectation of total involvement in the lives of students on campus.

  • Teaching:
  • 4 sections of English with an emphasis on teaching writing
  • Afternoon Program:
    • 2 seasons (athletics, performing arts, and/or community service)
  • Residential Life Program: dorm parenting or equivalent 
  • Other:  Serving as an advisor to students
  • A demonstrated interest in social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work
  • A demonstrated interest in ongoing curricular and pedagogical professional development work
  • Participation in professional development as related to social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work.

QUALIFICATIONS

B.A. in English preferred; M.A. preferred; English teaching experience preferred; experience in coaching and/or playing interscholastic athletics and/or experience directing in the performing arts preferred; must be able to work collegially; must be committed to working in a diverse community and have the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations; must enjoy working with young people in a boarding school environment. Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive students in school-owned cars, vans, and mini-buses.
