
Director of Well-Being and Counseling

Brewster Academy seeks to hire a talented and thoughtful mental health professional to be our first Director of Well-Being and Counseling. This is a new and exciting opportunity for a thoughtful, student-centered professional with strong leadership skills, vision, and a desire to help shape the way schools, and Brewster specifically, look at the health and well-being of all of their students and staff.
Position Summary:
The Director of well-being and Counseling oversees the strategic direction of the Well-Being and Counseling office. Working closely with the Assistant Head of School, the Director, and their team will work to build and implement a framework focused on a forward-looking approach to holistic student well-being. Out of this framework will come high-quality programs and services that will focus on enhancing the student experience and supporting student success. The Director will oversee one full-time counselor, be a member of the Student Life Team and the School Resource Team, and will report to the Assistant Head of School.
General Responsibilities:
- Provide crisis intervention, ongoing monitoring, and assessment of students.
- Provide individual counseling, group counseling, and crisis counseling to students.
- Provide psychosocial evaluations on students as needed.
- Conduct ongoing evaluation of well-being and counseling services to assess the efficacy of individual services, community outreach, and broader efforts to promote a culture of well-being
- Work with students, faculty, and staff to create customized training, workshops, and presentations that individual and community mental health and well-being.
- Conduct alcohol and substance abuse evaluations as needed.
- Support and participate in the social and emotional learning program.
- Serves as a supportive adult to students who are going through the disciplinary process.
- Oversight of the day-to-day operational needs of the counseling center.
- Serves as a member of the School Resource Team, and Student Life Team, and attends and actively participates in Team Meetings.
- Collaborate with the Director of Health Services on retention and treatment plans for students.
- Collaborate with the Director of Admission, their team, and prospective families on the appropriate fit of applicants, seeing the process through to successful matriculation and transition.
Desired Qualifications:
- Hold an applicable, current, and valid State of New Hampshire licensure in counseling, mental health, or a related field.
- Minimum of a Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, school psychology, social work, or related human services field.
- Demonstrated experience leading a student support services and/or student counseling services department; previous counseling experience in a school.
- Effective leadership and management skills, including interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Experience with personnel supervision and training.
- Ability and desire to connect joyfully, appropriately, and respectfully with students, faculty, and parents as needed.
- A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Strong coordination, evaluation, and assessment skills to promote best practices in the ever-changing landscape of student support services.
- Deep and broad knowledge of counseling, public health approaches to promoting well-being, and health and wellness education across the developmental stages.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; a positive attitude, energy, and an inspiring and entrepreneurial leadership style.
- Commitment to lifetime learning and professional and personal integrity.
This is a full-time (10-Month) faculty position that follows the School’s schedule. As we are a boarding school, the Director of well-being and Counseling or a designee will be available to attend to emergencies and crisis situations as they arise, including having “on-call” responsibilities throughout the school year.
