Derby Academy, a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 coeducational day school with 350 students located in Hingham, Massachusetts. Rooted in the school’s motto, “Improve Both Mind and Heart,” Derby provides students with a joyful and rigorous academic environment. We seek a Director of STEAM Learning & Innovation to begin in August 2024. This exciting opportunity is a new position for us and will lead the enhancement of our current STEAM programs to foster creative problem-solving, collaboration, critical thinking, and encourages discovery and exploration so that Derby students are innovators, leaders, and learners who are prepared to rise to the challenges of the 21st century.

The Director of STEAM Learning & Innovation is responsible for embedding the pedagogy of STEAM education across the PreK – 8 curriculum, as well as providing students and teachers with innovative learning experiences. We are looking to elevate our current STEAM programming with the design of a place-based STEAM curriculum that capitalizes on our remarkable and expansive campus with ample open space, the vast wooded area along Broad Cove, and our unique ecosystem to teach students about the many lenses of environmental sustainability and our civic duty to protect our world. The Director is responsible for leading the process of imagining, creating, and implementing this PreK – 8 STEAM program with input from all stakeholders of our school.

In addition to developing this Signature Program, the Director develops and delivers STEAM education and training for students, teachers, and the larger Derby Academy community and supervises and maintains the campus makerspace and innovation center. The Director provides opportunities for the Derby community to gather, share, create, innovate, and most importantly, inspire each other with the possibilities of science, technology, engineering, art/design, and math.

Curriculum & Program

  • Lead the process of imagining, creating, and implementing a PreK – 8 STEAM Signature Program at Derby that capitalizes on our remarkable and expansive campus with ample open space, the vast wooded area along Broad Cove, and our unique ecosystem to teach students about environmental sustainability and our civic duty to protect our world;
  • Develop curriculum for and teach science, technology, and engineering design courses as needed;
  • Collaborate with school leadership to expand and innovate our school’s STEAM offerings;
  • Partner with the School’s academic leadership to promote innovation, technology, engineering, design, and creativity across the curriculum;
  • Collaborate with teachers to enhance the curriculum the STEAM opportunities within current projects;
  • Design and facilitate hands-on, interdisciplinary projects with students; team-teach with classroom teachers;
  • Plan instructional opportunities to build competencies and skills with resources and equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, Arduino, power tools, sewing machines, as well as low-tech tools;
  • Provide safety and equipment training for students and faculty;
  • Assist with STEAM clubs and other extracurricular programming, as needed.

Professional Development

  • Plan and lead professional development programming and workshops for faculty around STEAM education and innovative teaching;
  • Support and coach faculty with their learning programs on making within the classroom;
  • Build capacity through the coaching of teachers and help them to see possibilities for interdisciplinary teaching and learning.


  • Supervise and maintain the campus makerspace and innovation center, manage and develop routine maintenance protocol for equipment, and keep inventory of equipment and raw materials;
  • Research, develop, and prototype innovative STEAM activities and maker activities, and maintain materials, tools and equipment including hardware and software;
  • Keep informed of trends and best practices in STEAM education;
  • Perform general troubleshooting and required maintenance of equipment, furnishings and software.

Community Engagement & Partnerships

  • Create opportunities and programming in STEAM for families and the nearby community;
  • Develop and maintain partnership with outside organizations and experts that enhance the delivery of the curriculum and program, including STEAM professionals, educational institutions and maker organizations;
  • Design and plan summer programming and camps;
  • Effectively communicate STEAM-related events and resources using a variety of methods, including social media, web, written, verbal, and video.

Education/Experience Required

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in:
    • Coding and using media, design, and digital fabrication tools and software
    • STEAM education and place-based curriculum design
    • Providing meaningful professional development to teachers
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field; master’s degree preferred.
