Director of Makerspace Educational Initiatives

Phillips Academy (PA) seeks a Makerspace Director of Educational Initiatives to begin in January or September 2025. Reporting to the Director of the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library, the Makerspace Director of Educational Initiatives will manage our 4,000 square foot makerspace, The Nest, which houses a data lab, a robotics lab, a woodshop, and classroom spaces. The ideal candidate will be an energetic and dynamic team player; have strong organizational, writing, and public speaking skills; and be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

This position is 1.0 FTE, works the Summer Session at PA during July, and has the classification of Administrative Faculty. This position does not come with housing.

Essential Functions

This position has the responsibility for leading the growth of the maker culture at Phillips Academy (PA), which entails:

  • Fostering an open and welcoming space for individuals from all levels of making, design, and innovation experience, and creating an inclusive community of makerspace users.
  • Being affiliated with one or more academic departments and sitting on various campus-wide committees.
  • Working closely with PA faculty to integrate the diverse resources in the makerspace into various academic departments’ curriculums.
  • Collaborating with various stakeholders at PA, particularly students, to create workshops, events, and trainings that benefit the whole community.

Manage the day-to-day operation of the makerspace, which includes:

  • Supervising full-time and part-time makerspace team members.
  • Scheduling and providing teaching instruction on all makerspace classes.
  • Overseeing the makerspace budget and managing makerspace endowed and/or discretionary funding.
  • Maintaining all equipment, software, and supplies in the makerspace with the support of other team members.
  • Creating reports and providing metrics on the services and resources used in the makerspace.
  • Providing technical and creative maker consultation, support, and resources for PA community members.
  • Advising on new equipment purchases and upholding a working knowledge of what equipment and tools are becoming most useful or necessary in the field of making.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree at minimum. Master’s degree or beyond preferred.
  • Managerial experience in a makerspace, fabrication lab, innovation lab, or equivalent educational setting.
  • Experience working with faculty to integrate makerspace resources into curriculums and in creating new and dynamic curriculums for makerspace courses.
  • Knowledge and experience with typical equipment found in design/makerspaces such as 3D printing, laser cutters, CNC machinery tools, and sewing equipment, and helping others with these technologies.
  • Comfort using and teaching others the software associated with a makerspace and its equipment.
  • Passion about technology, its implications for making, and for encouraging others in the field.
  • The ability to meet deadlines and manage shifting priorities.
  • The ability to develop and implement a vision to meet the above objectives
