The Governor’s Academy, the oldest boarding school in New England, inspires and engages inquisitive students in ninth through twelfth grade. Our 456-acre campus is located thirty miles north of Boston and five miles south of Newburyport, a classic New England coastal town. Govs has approximately 400 students and 250 employees.

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a part-time music teaching position that will have ongoing contact with and direct responsibility for the academic and social life of students on campus (in loco parentis). The successful candidate will be deeply invested in a student-centered and process-intensive approach to music pedagogy, will have enthusiasm and appreciation for working with adolescents of a wide range of arts experience, and will desire to take imaginative risks and innovate in one’s teaching. With teaching faculty status comes the expectation of total involvement in the lives of students on campus. The Director of Instrumental Music also contributes to the musical life of the campus through various means inside and outside the classroom. 

The Director of Instrumental Music is a part-time teaching faculty position and is not eligible to participate in the Academy’s benefits program.  

  • Responsibilities:
    • Director for two instrumental performance groups (orchestra and jazz band) 
    • Co-coordination, alongside the Director of Choral Music and the Technical Director, of two major concerts per year as well as recitals and additional performances on- and off-campus
    • Oversight of small independent student ensembles including chamber groups and jazz combos
    • May include leadership of the Pit Band in the Winter Musical (afternoon program)
  • Must show a demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for professional development work in social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion through the arts and have experience creating equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist spaces in their teaching.

QUALIFICATIONS

B.A. or B.S. in music or music education preferred. Masters degree preferred. Experience directing instrumental ensembles of various styles; experience teaching in a secondary school or college setting. Must be able to work collegially, be committed to working in a diverse community; have experience working and communicating with diverse populations; enjoy working with young people in a boarding school environment;  and must have a valid driver’s license.
