The Meadowbrook School of Weston, a pre-kindergarten through 8th grade school located in Weston, MA, seven miles west of Boston, is seeking a Director of Counseling to join its faculty for the 2024-2025 school year. This is a 10-month, full-time position.

The Director of Counseling is responsible for creating and leading the school’s vision for the counseling program along with designing, implementing and monitoring systems for mental health and wellbeing. You will work closely with students, the Heads of Lower and Middle School, Lower School Counselor, Director of Student Support Services, Learning Specialists, faculty, and parents/guardians to support students to promote community understanding of the social-emotional well-being and intersectionality of the identity of students.

Skills and Responsibilities:

  • Direct clinical services to support mental health and social-emotional growth of Grade 5 through 8 students – individual, dyad, small groups, whole class; crisis intervention as needed
  • Consultation as a resource to faculty and administration; provides psycho-education to faculty
  • Observes students in the classroom and develops behavior plans in partnership with teachers and learning specialists
  • Teaches social-emotional skills and facilitates preventative mental health education in Grade 5 through 8
  • Provides guidance to parents/guardians in individual meetings as needed; develops and leads parent workshops around social-emotional child development
  • Clinical supervision and advising of Lower School Counselor in reading and interpreting psychoeducational evaluations, writing learning plans, providing feedback to faculty, parents and students as needed
  • Strong collaboration with the Equity & Inclusion Office
  • Makes referrals to outside providers such as therapy as needed; maintains diverse list of clinicians; consults regularly as school liaison with outside providers
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Meadowbrook’s statement of inclusion by actively seeking out professional development on providing trauma-informed care to diverse populations specifically focusing on race-based stress, prevention and coping processes
  • Articulation and oversight of the school’s SEL curriculum (JK – 8); collaborates with the Lower School Counselor (JK – 4th Grade Counselor) to enhance SEL program, mental health protocols and counseling procedures.
  • Meets regularly with the Head of Middle School, Middle School faculty, and Lower School Counselor; attends division meetings and serves on the Student Support Team

Qualifications:

  • Masters-level clinical social worker, or an advanced degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology; Licensed or licensed eligible in Massachusetts
  • Previous counseling experience in a school and supervisory experience preferred
  • Knowledge and experience providing evidence-based clinical skills in school milieu
  • Experience with developmentally appropriate approaches to teaching and learning, such as Responsive Classroom and/or RULER, or other SEL training
  • Deep knowledge of best-practices in preventative mental health and wellness education and anti-racist education, with commitment to personal growth in these areas
  • Experience planning curriculum and teaching social-emotional learning at elementary and middle school levels
  • Ability and experience in developing, coordinating, and executing mental health assessments, interventions and behavioral plans for students
  • Experience with maintaining confidentiality- boundaries with, and documentation of- students and families
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills; including the ability to meaningfully connect with all constituents, with a positive attitude, energy, and an inspiring and entrepreneurial style
  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community
  • Knowledge of and ability to work effectively with populations across different cultures
