The Director of Community Health and Counseling has demonstrated interest in working with adolescents and families in a school setting. This individual is responsible for directing the counseling department and managing and implementing a coordinated school health program consistent with Massachusetts state laws and the Department of Public Health regulations governing school health and those that regulate nursing, counseling, and athletic training. As a direct care provider, advocate, and educator, the director will assess, plan, and implement the school health program and protocols. In addition to the day-to-day support of students, the director will also engage in broader initiatives, including overseeing advising and offering health-related programming to support the residential community, faculty, staff, and parents.
Essential Functions
- Oversee the daily operations of the Health Center and Counseling Department
- Ensure compliance with Massachusetts regulations and standards for school nursing and counseling services
- Provide school-based social and emotional counseling for CSW students
- Provide triage care for emerging and ongoing emotional health issues and make referrals to outside clinicians for assessment and treatment planning
- Provide consultation and education regarding adolescent mental health, learning, and development issues for students, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians
- Coordinate communication with external mental health providers to support school-based student intervention and support
- Contribute programming on topics related to physical, social, emotional, and mental health for parents and guardians as part of parent engagement initiatives
- Maintain a referral list of outside mental health providers
- Oversee and coordinate, alongside members of the Academic Office, student health leaves and return from health-related leaves of absence
- Revise, develop, and oversee the advisory curriculum to be delivered in biweekly meetings by faculty advisors. This work will be in partnership with the student life, DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging), and academic offices.
- Provide professional development and training opportunities for faculty/staff in topics such as mental health, suicide prevention, and mandated reporting
- Facilitate weekly student support meetings (Structure Team)
- Contribute health-related curriculum for class meetings, assemblies, and residential life
- Be accessible to the administrator-on-duty in the event of emergencies after-hours
Other Functions:
- Serve as a member of the Structure Team, Health Team, and the Emergency Response Team.
- Serve as a resource for advisors in family matters, individual student issues, and health-related programmatic modifications.
- Review, revise, and create, in collaboration with the Student Life Office, school practices, protocols, and policies that enhance student health and safety.
- Coordinate a health survey, review data, present results and adjust programming according to relevant data collected, as determined by the school administration.
- Participate in additional school programming that might include: teaching a course, participating in the PACE program, or the equivalent as assigned by the Assistant Head of School for Student Life.
- Chaperone responsibilities in our weekend activities program.
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of School or the Assistant Head of School for Student Life.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher in a related field
- 6-10 years experience in a counseling setting, preferably in a school-based role
- Experience in program development and supervising staff
- Excellent communication, listening, mediation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information
- Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to multitask and prioritize workload
- Ability to make decisions and act with the highest ethical standards, appropriate boundaries, discretion, and sound judgment.

Preferred Specialized Knowledge, Licenses, etc.:
- Current and active license in Massachusetts (LICSW, LMHC, PhD, PsyD)
- Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in school health and counseling
- Ability to obtain a Massachusetts driver’s license before the start date
Physical Requirements:
- Dexterity for office machine/supply operation, including but not limited to computers, telephones, copy machines, and printers
- Stooping, bending, and reaching for files or supplies, occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds, and sitting or standing for extended periods are common
- Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks and function in a fast-paced working environment
- Mobility and balance to navigate stairs and uneven terrain
Working Conditions:
- Works in all conditions during the contracted period
- Full days, including occasional weekends and after-school hours
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Responsible for the oversight of the nurses, counselors, and, in partnership with the director of athletics, the athletic trainer

School Description:
The Cambridge School of Weston, founded in 1886, provides a progressive education that emphasizes deep learning and meaningful relationships through a dynamic program that inspires students to discover who they are and what their contribution is to their school, their community, and the world.
