Summary

Fessenden’s Director of Athletics oversees the implementation of the School’s athletic philosophy including the Middle School (Gr. 5 – 6) and Upper School athletic programs (Gr. 7 – 9), and the Lower School physical education program (Pre-K – Gr. 4). The Director of Athletics works with faculty, coaches, students, and parents to ensure a positive, healthy, and joyful athletic and physical education experience for all Fessenden students. The Director of Athletics must display a passion for elementary and middle school physical fitness and athletics, a healthy and age-appropriate approach to competition, an ability to lead colleagues in support of the School’s athletic and physical education programs, and a commitment to boys and boys’ education.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Administrative Council, the Calendar Committee, and work in direct communication with the Head of School and Assistant Head of School
  • Manage the daily operation of the program including scheduling all interscholastic games, oversight of the purchasing and management of equipment and uniforms, transportation for games and practices, and hiring of officials
  • Oversee coaching assignments, orient new coaches, and manage, support, and evaluate all coaches and physical education faculty
  • Ensure that character education and lessons of equity and inclusion are core components of the School’s athletic program
  • Lead on-campus professional development efforts for coaches and provide guidance for off-campus opportunities
  • Manage the program’s Administrative Assistant, Equipment Manager, and Athletic Trainer
  • Ensure that all students are meeting the requirements of attendance and participation, and communicate with administrative colleagues if they are not
  • Communicate with parents individually and by team so they are aware of program and team philosophies, policies, and schedules
  • Develop and maintain department budget as well as oversee usage schedules for the Pallotta Athletic Center, fields, rink, and tennis and squash courts
  • Coordinate with administrative colleagues around athletic facilities management and upkeep
  • Maintain an up-to-date athletics portion of the website including game schedules
  • Coach at least one season

Qualifications

  • Five years of independent school experience and a history of athletic involvement
  • A love of sports and physical fitness
  • Strong communication skills and a collegial manner
  • An ability to lead and support colleagues simultaneously
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity and multicultural education
  • Integrity, a strong work ethic, and demonstrated leadership skills
  • Discretion and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters discreetly
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
  • A commitment to boys and boys’ education
