Walnut Hill School for the Arts, Natick, MA

Walnut Hill School for the Arts seeks a full-time Dance Instructor and Choreographer in its Theater department for the 2021-2022 academic year starting in mid-August 2021. The ideal candidate has expertise in teaching jazz, tap, ballet and Laban Movement. Additional responsibilities include choreographing one production each year, and preparing students for the college audition process. In addition to academic and/or professional training, we also seek individuals who have had experience as performers. This is a full-time academic year position reporting to the Head of Theater.

Teaching & Department Duties

  • Teach the assigned number of sections of beginning through advanced courses in dance and movement;
  • Prepare lessons and develop curriculum that reflects the diverse educational and cultural backgrounds of the student body; teach, lead, and guide students and promote an open and safe classroom space;
  • Collaborate with other members of the Theater department;
  • Choreograph one production each year;
  • Attend weekly department meetings; and
  • Assist in selecting material and preparing students for the college audition process.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Support the Student Life program including serving as a student advisor, club advisor, chaperoning school events, weekend duty, and/or participating in other opportunities for community involvement that arise throughout the school year;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments to foster a positive working and educational environment that supports the school’s mission, vision, and core values;
  • Attend and/or engage in student arts productions, shows, exhibitions, and performances;
  • Attend and participate in weekly department meetings, assembly, Professional Development days, diversity, equity, and inclusion opportunities, training and orientation programs, benefit meetings, mandatory seminars, team-building exercises, and safety training; and
  • Pursue professional development opportunities in and out of school; display willingness and ability to grow, learn, explore new approaches, and practice self-reflection.


  • BFA in Musical Theater/Dance or equivalent experience required;
  • 3+ years of experience teaching and choreographing musical theater dance styles;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in teaching and choreographing a wide range of show styles including non-western and multi-cultural shows;
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a safe, brave, and inclusive community;
  • Possess cultural competence in working with diverse populations and commitment to learning about and practicing anti-racist work;
  • Comfort with technology and willingness to adopt new technologies as needed;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills along with strong collaboration and team-oriented working and leadership skills;
  • Share an educational and artistic vision that aligns with the core principles and values of Walnut Hill;
  • Ability to balance a pursuit of academic, artistic, and institutional excellence with compassion and nurture for each individual; and
  • Possess and exude a positive attitude, passion for teaching and learning, and a sense of humor.

Physical Demands

Physical demands include dexterity for tools and equipment and office machine and supply operation including but not limited to writing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy/fax machine, and printers. Stooping, bending, dancing, traveling to/from locations on campus, ascending/descending stairs, reaching and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common. Ability to demonstrate acting and dance styles is required.
