Position Summary

The Fessenden School seeks an experienced Crew Coach to assist in coaching boys in Grades 7-9. Candidates should have a proven record of coaching excellence, particularly with this age group and the ability to incorporate the school’s core values of Honesty, Compassion and Respect into their coaching philosophy. The ideal candidate will be able to attend all practices, which occur at Community Rowing Inc. (CRI) in Brighton, MA. No weekend competitions. This is a seasonal position from March 26th to May 24, 2024.


The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coaching daily practices in the afternoons starting at 2:20 pm – 4:20 pm.

  • Occasional van driving responsibilities.

  • Partnering with the head coach to oversee the student-athletes when discussing seating, training, equipment, and racing.

  • Teaching the boys training and racing techniques as well as self care.

  • Instilling in the boys respect for and knowledge of the CRI boathouse.

  • Understanding the significance and responsibility of rowing on the Charles.

  • Teaching them their responsibilities on the river.

  • Teaching the essentials of equipment and maintenance.


  • 2+ years of coaching experience preferred.

  • Prior rowing experience at the collegiate level preferred.

  • Bachelor degree preferred.

  • Active/valid driver’s license.

  • Strong understanding of rowing technical skills.

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.

  • Ability to serve in a diverse community of colleagues, students, and parents.

  • Enthusiasm and communication skills to engage boys and build meaningful relationships.

  • Successful criminal background check.

  • Experience operating motorized coaching launches preferred.

  • Willingness to obtain CRI safety certifications.

  • Frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear.

  • Regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or knee.

  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move rowing equipment.

  • Majority of work is performed at the Community Rowing, Inc facility in Brighton, MA and on the Charles River.
