Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher Job Summary

South Shore Christian Academy is a Christian, Preschool – Grade 12, college-preparatory, richly diverse day school in Weymouth, Massachusetts. The Director of Athletics and Physical Education Teacher is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and developing all aspects of the athletics and physical education program. In keeping with our mission, the ultimate objective of this leader’s work is to help students to encounter truth, to internalize and apply knowledge about athletics and physical fitness, to exhibit spiritual growth, and to develop Christian character through meaningful, carefully designed athletics-oriented experiences.

This leader’s responsibilities include developing and managing the department’s budget; hiring, training, and managing coaches; managing the athletics schedule; promoting athletic activities and events; and tracking team progress. The Director of Athletics will also liaise with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and other athletic directors. In the teaching capacity, this individual will conceptualize and teach lower and middle school physical education classes.

The Director of Athletics and Physical Education Teacher must be meticulously attentive to detail, unflappable, flexible, enthusiastic, encouraging, supportive, and absolutely dedicated to cultivating a vibrant Christian environment for coaches and student athletes.

Essential Responsibilities

  • In word and deed, set a consistent example of Christian sportsmanship.
  • Exercise overall responsibility for the athletics programs and department.
  • Develop and manage the athletics budget.
  • Initiate and facilitate long-range planning to further develop and improve athletic programs.
  • Hire, train, manage, and mentor coaches; carefully monitor coaches’ performance and institute corrective measures and/or dismiss coaches as necessary.
  • Coordinate with coaches on games, practice, and event schedules, including transportation.
  • Develop and use systems to clearly communicate schedules and rosters to all parties.
  • Reserve fields and courts for games and practices, and arrange for officials for home games.
  • Arrange travel logistics for all sports teams.
  • Systematically monitor and manage student conduct and safety before, during, after, and on route to and from practices and games; institute systems to improve conduct and safety as necessary.
  • Plan and organize special events, including three athletic recognition ceremonies.
  • Promote athletic events and programs to the SSCA community.
  • Track and report on team progress; recommend means of improvement.
  • Purchase athletic and PE equipment and ensure that it is properly maintained and stored.
  • Scrupulously attend to the cleanliness, organization, and safe upkeep of the weight room, gym, field, vans, and storage areas.
  • Maintain an awareness of best-practices and changing regulations; implement procedures to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Ensure that both boys’ and girls’ sports teams receive equitable attention and dedication.
  • Plan and implement purposeful, developmentally appropriate physical education lessons and activities for lower and middle school students, and report on student progress.
  • Demonstrate support for the school’s mission, board, administration, and school-wide improvement efforts such as accreditation.
  • Follow all expectations regarding the HOS’s understanding of professionalism, including social media practices, student relations, communication protocols, punctuality, and collegiality.

Other Duties

  • Fulfill assigned duties during and outside of school hours. This may include supervising students, conducting field trips, participating in retreats, overseeing special activities, advising student organizations, and other duties.
  • Support Admissions and Development functions, including but not limited to: participating in admissions events, hosting “shadow students,” and evaluating prospective students.
  • Collaboratively set individual and school-wide professional development goals; participate in on and off-campus professional development activities.
  • Attend and participate in all faculty meetings and trainings.
  • Read and be familiar with all policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time by HOS.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a Christian and affirm SSCA Statement of Faith and Teaching Positions.
  • Must exhibit a high degree of cultural competency to contribute within a multi-racial, multi-denominational environment.
  • A Bachelor’s or master’s degree in sports management, physical education, or related field.
  • Experience in coaching, teaching, and/or administration.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with developing and managing a budget.
  • Ability to handle scrutiny from parents and the public.
  • In-depth working knowledge of all SSCA sports, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, baseball, cross-country, and track.
  • Keen understanding of how young athletes should be developed.
  • Required to move about campus regularly, including navigating stairs; to sit, stand, talk, hear, see; and to lift loads of 30 lbs.
  • SSCA conducts background checks and employment authorizations.
