The Advent School: Associate Director of Enrichment

The Advent School, located in the Beacon Hill section of Boston, Massachusetts, serves 200 students in pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. A mission-focused school founded on the principles of social justice, Advent has served the students and families of Boston since 1961. Through its Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum, Advent’s faculty deliver authentic, rigorous, and experiential learning opportunities that encourage students to “learn with passion, act with courage, and change the world.”

The Advent School seeks an experienced leader to serve as an Associate Director of Enrichment. In partnership with the Director of Enrichment, the Associate Director ensures the success of Advent’s robust auxiliary programs. This role is right for you if you love working with children and have strong organizational skills.

The hours for this role are:

  • September – June: After-School, ADVENTures, and Makerspace Saturday programs
      • 10:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., Monday through Friday
      • 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., up to six (6) Saturdays
    • February and April: School Break Program
      • 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday – Friday 
  • mid-June through early August: Design at Advent Summer Program
    • 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday

Additional night and weekend hours may be required as directed by the Head of School.

The Associate Director of Enrichment is a salaried position for the 2023-24 academic year, including medical and dental insurance, a 403(b) plan, professional development opportunities, and vacation benefits.

Responsibilities & Duties

Program & People Management

  • Develop engaging program themes
  • Manage physical resources, including curriculum, technology, and materials
  • Support the hiring process by screening applicants, conducting reference checks and co-lead staff orientations
  • Manage the After-School teaching schedule, including serving as a substitute teacher if necessary
  • Serve as point person for After-School faculty by creating and maintaining lesson plans
  • Create a positive classroom environment conducive to teaching and learning by being a resource for program faculty and staff
  • Guide program faculty through mission-aligned classroom management and student discipline strategies
  • Communicate effectively with families to maintain positive home/school partnership

Data Management

  • Create and manage registration forms for all Enrichment programs
  • Manage program database to track attendance, medical information, and class schedules
  • Integrate program forms (i.e., registration, attendance, medical, class and faculty schedules, etc.) into Blackbaud
  • Manage all email and phone communication related to After-School program attendance, arrival, and dismissal 
  • Manage private music and language lesson schedules

Content Creation

  • Co-design and publish the After-School course catalog three (3) times per year 
  • Design program materials, including flyers and write-ups for weekly school newsletter
  • Maintain program social media accounts

Required Skills & Characteristics

The Advent School is a good fit for professionals who believe in the School’s mission of education for equity and social justice. Candidates should possess strong personal drive and motivation, demonstrate exemplary professional behavior and values, and be resourceful, responsible, and collaborative.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and 1- 2 years of experience as a program coordinator or site director in an after-school, camp, or child care setting. Experience with Blackbaud products is a plus. The ideal candidate should also be:

  • Excellent at managing their time, with the ability to take on concurrent tasks and projects
  • Well-organized, thorough, and highly reliable
  • Confident using technology
  • A courteous, positive communicator, especially during problem-solving conversation
  • Able to maintain a high level of professionalism with students, parents/caregivers, and colleagues
