Assistant Director of the Virginia Wing Library

Winsor seeks an assistant director of the Virginia Wing Library, which offers a dynamic library program for both the Lower and Upper Schools, beginning in August 2022. Applicants must have a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited institution, knowledge of current and emerging library technology, trends, and practices, and experience or interest in working as a youth services librarian. Successful candidates will be highly organized, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and be able to collaborate effectively. Candidates must understand and appreciate the whole student experience, including, but not limited to extracurricular opportunities, advising, athletics, the arts. A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work as well as an understanding of the importance of engagement in community life are essential. The ability to use technology effectively in the teaching and learning process is a critical component of the job. The assistant director of the Virginia Wing Library reports to the library director.

Essential Duties

  • Oversees library operations in the absence of the library director
  • Oversees all library technical services including:
    • Processing of library materials
    • Cataloging and classifying the library’s collections in all media
      o Delegating technical services and other tasks to pre-professional librarian, library assistant, and volunteers
  • Works with the the library director and others to design and implement the library’s overall program, with particular emphasis on either the Lower School or Upper School research curriculum
  • Collaborates with teachers to design, implement, and evaluate inquiry lessons and units
  • Stays abreast of emerging technologies and formats
    • Stays abreast of research relevant to school libraries, student learning, and new developments in education as well as local, regional, and nations standards and benchmarks
  • Takes advantage of professional development opportunities and shares new learning with colleagues and administration
  • Maintains either the Lower School or Upper School page in Canvas, Winsor’s Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Collaborates with the library director and classroom teachers to develop an up-to-date collection of resources in multiple genres and formats
  • Promotes a love of reading and literature by recommending and booktalking fiction and nonfiction, creating displays, holding contests and other means
  • Serves on faculty committees, as assigned
  • Serves as student advisor, advises a student club, and otherwise participates in the life of the school
  • Performs other duties as assigned
