Assistant Director of Strategic Communications

The Assistant Director of Strategic Communications is The Wheeler School’s lead storyteller and content strategist. They will use a range of marketing and communications platforms, including social media, video, podcasts, photography, and digital and print media, to increase the school’s visibility and enhance its reputation. The Assistant Director will present Wheeler’s people and programs to our target audiences in alignment with the school’s brand and primary objectives, which are related to enrollment, fundraising, internal and external communications, and community engagement.

Candidates should have a visual eye and a nose for news, as well as enthusiasm for education’s impact on the individual student and the wider world. We seek an Assistant Director of Communications who is creative and collaborative, open to learning about and using different technologies for content development and distribution, and who brings a sense of curiosity and joy to their work while producing on a daily basis. They should enjoy engaging with students in an educational setting and have an interest in being part of the life of the school community in different ways.

Duties and Responsibilities

In partnering with the Director of Strategic Communications on the development and execution of Wheeler’s marketing and communications program, the Assistant Director will focus on the following areas:

1)    Content Production and Distribution

  • Source, pitch, and produce Wheeler stories and content series from inside and outside of the classroom, building relationships with faculty, staff, students, parents and alumnae/i in order to know what’s going on at the school.
  • Post content and information across our platforms, including the school’s website and social media channels.
  • Take and edit photos and produce short videos as needed.
  • Manage the school’s photo and video database by curating files provided by colleagues, including external partners. Create shot lists for freelance photographers and videographers as needed for special events and projects.
  • Produce content for and serve as the editor of This Week at Wheeler, our community e-newsletter.
  • Write articles for the school’s alumnae/i magazine, Now & Then.
  • Consider and create new types of content, for example a podcast series, that will help us effectively engage audiences and help us achieve campaign and institutional goals.
  • Manage Wheeler’s universal content calendar.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research and determine the metrics that matter in order to measure the performance and impact of content and communications projects.
  • Copyedit and proofread general school communications and specific event or constituent-related communications as needed.
  • Provide communications and marketing support for major school events and initiatives.
  • Distribute community messages, as needed, via our broadcast messaging and email marketing platforms.

2)    Social Media Engagement

  • Manage and assess Wheeler’s social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn, and identify other social media channels and tactics that can support our primary objectives.
  • Positively engage and thoughtfully grow Wheeler’s social media following among our target audiences.
  • Use analytical tools to track and benchmark engagement, especially as it relates to our institutional objectives.
  • Propose, build, and assess social and digital campaigns that support signature Wheeler events, enrollment, fundraising, and other key activities.

3)    Visual Design Development and Consultation

  • Design a range of communications and marketing pieces, from event posters and invitations, to social media graphics, e-newsletters, and advertisements, in alignment with Wheeler’s visual identity system.
  • Provide school departments and offices with the correct logo, typefaces, and color palette needed for their materials and merchandise.
  • Partner with the Director of Strategic Communications to provide brand guidance and address emerging visual identity needs and opportunities that allow Wheeler colleagues to design projects with flexibility and within the school’s brand standards.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • B.A. in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism or related field
  • Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Distinct appreciation for the value of working and communicating in a diverse environment and a demonstrated commitment to the development of cultural competence skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with engaging and building community on a variety of social media platforms
  • Photography and video production and editing experience
  • Proficiency with design software (Wheeler uses the Adobe Creative Cloud portfolio of programs)
  • Knowledge of HTML and experience with basic website content management systems
  • Knowledge of and experience with email marketing and broadcast messaging systems
  • Availability to cover occasional night and weekend events and storytelling opportunities, as well as assisting other departments, like Enrollment and Advancement, with their events
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects, be flexible and detail-oriented, and prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Desire and ability to work as a team player
  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience

Please Note

In addition to the the responsibilities detailed above, the functions of a staff member in the Strategic Communications Office at Wheeler include:

  • Handling and transporting audio/visual equipment weighing up to 30 pounds across campus to and from various classrooms and events
  • Remaining in a stationary position for stretches of time
  • Frequently walking, standing, squatting, and/or kneeling while performing assigned tasks
  • Performing work that requires some physical strength and agility.
