Assistant Athletic Director / Athletic Trainer

Ursuline Academy seeks an experienced, highly organized professional to serve as its Assistant Athletic Director/Athletic Trainer, starting in mid-August. Reporting to the Athletic Director, this full-time, academic-year position serves as the school’s primary athletic trainer and supports the daily administration and operation of Ursuline’s interscholastic athletics program.
The Assistant Athletic Director / Athletic Trainer is responsible for supporting the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes through injury prevention, evaluation, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation, emergency response, and return-to-play coordination. The position works closely with student-athletes, families, coaches, the School Nurse, administrators, healthcare providers, and other members of the school community.
In addition to the position’s athletic training responsibilities, the Assistant Athletic Director / Athletic Trainer assists with athletic scheduling, transportation, facilities, student-athlete registration and documentation, coach support, game-day operations, and compliance with school and Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association requirements.
The successful candidate will demonstrate sound professional judgment, strong organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and frequently changing environment. Key Responsibilities
Athletic Trainer and Student-Athlete Care
- Serve as the school’s primary athletic trainer and provide coverage for designated practices, home competitions, tournaments, and other school-sponsored athletic activities.
- Evaluate athletic injuries and illnesses and provide appropriate immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation, reconditioning, and referral to healthcare providers.
- Coordinate medical clearances, participation restrictions, concussion management, rehabilitation plans, and return-to-play decisions in accordance with applicable laws, school protocols, and medical guidance.
- Communicate with student-athletes, families, coaches, school health personnel, administrators, and healthcare providers regarding injuries, treatment plans, restrictions, and return-to-play status.
- Develop and support injury-prevention, sports medicine, and emergency-response programs, including emergency action plans for school facilities and off-campus competition sites.
- Educate student-athletes, coaches, and athletic personnel regarding injury prevention, conditioning, hydration, heat illness, concussion awareness, emergency procedures, and safe athletic participation.
- Monitor environmental and playing conditions and recommend modifications, delays, or cancellations when conditions present a health or safety concern.
Athletic Training Operations and Compliance
- Maintain an organized, sanitary, secure, and appropriately supplied athletic training room.
- Coordinate the ordering, storage, maintenance, and replacement of athletic training supplies, first-aid materials, protective equipment, and emergency equipment within the approved budget.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records of injuries, evaluations, treatments, rehabilitation plans, medical clearances, restrictions, and return-to-play status.
- Manage athletic medical documentation in accordance with applicable privacy requirements, school policies, and record-retention practices.
- Maintain current knowledge of professional standards, applicable laws, MIAA requirements, and health and safety regulations related to secondary-school athletics.
- Track injury trends and recommend appropriate changes to training practices, equipment, facilities, or safety procedures.
Athletic Department and Program Support
- Assist the Athletic Director with the day-to-day administration and operation of the athletics program.
- Support athletic scheduling, transportation, facilities, officials, student-athlete registration, eligibility, rosters, medical clearances, and required participation documentation.
- Assist with home-event and game-day operations, including facility preparation, team and official arrivals, supervision, emergency coverage, and post-event procedures.
- Maintain athletic department schedules, records, forms, handbooks, and technology platforms used for registration, scheduling, communication, eligibility, and medical documentation.
- Serve as a resource to coaches regarding student-athlete health, injury prevention, participation restrictions, medical protocols, emergency procedures, and safe practice methods.
- Assist with coach onboarding and orientation regarding school policies, athletic department procedures, required certifications, and emergency action plans.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Director, School Nurse, coaches, administrators, and other school personnel to address health, safety, and operational needs.
- Provide administrative or operational coverage for the Athletic Director and athletic training coverage at off-campus events when assigned.
- Serve on the school’s Safety Committee, provide coverage in the School Nurse’s office when needed, and participate in school meetings, events, professional development, and community activities appropriate to the position.
- Perform other duties related to athletic training, athletic department operations, and the broader needs of the Academy as assigned.
Qualifications
Educational and Experience
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in athletic training from a professional program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education.
- Current certification as an Athletic Trainer through the Board of Certification, in good standing.
- Current Massachusetts licensure as an Athletic Trainer, or eligibility to obtain and maintain licensure before beginning employment.
- Current professional-level CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
- Minimum of two years of professional athletic training experience.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform athletic training responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws, Board of Certification requirements, and National Athletic Trainers’ Association professional standards and best practices.
- Experience developing or administering emergency action plans, concussion protocols, and return-to-play procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as an Assistant Athletic Director, athletic administrator, head athletic trainer, or in a comparable role.
- Experience working in a secondary-school, collegiate, or similarly structured athletic environment.
- Experience using athletic registration, scheduling, or medical-record systems such as Arbiter, FamilyID, or comparable platforms.
- Experience with athletic scheduling, transportation coordination, officials, facilities, game-day operations, eligibility documentation, and coach administration.
- Knowledge of Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association rules, policies, and procedures.
Working Conditions
This is a full-time, on-campus, academic-year position requiring a flexible schedule aligned with the school’s academic and athletic calendars. Regular evening and weekend work is required to provide athletic training coverage for practices, competitions, tournaments, and other school-sponsored activities. The schedule and workload will vary by athletic season and in response to the operational needs of the school. Local and regional travel with athletic teams may also be required, along with attendance at meetings and events outside of regular school hours.
Duties are performed in office, athletic, and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to varying weather and environmental conditions. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and movement throughout campus, as well as the ability to respond promptly to injuries and emergencies. The employee must be able to lift and carry athletic training supplies and equipment and assist with the movement or stabilization of injured individuals, with or without reasonable accommodation. The employee must also possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record and may be required to operate a school-owned, rented, or personal vehicle in connection with job responsibilities.
Compensation: $60,000 – $72,000 annually
This is a full-time, academic-year (10-month) position. The compensation range represents the established compensation parameters for this role. Placement within the range is determined based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity.
