The School

Jackson Walnut Park School is an early childhood and elementary school sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston.  Located in an historic neighborhood in Newton, JWP features an accredited Montessori early childhood program and a K-6 independent school in the Catholic tradition.  The school offers a rich, discovery-based curriculum, which includes STEAM education at all grades, a language arts program that follows Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study, the Responsive Classroom social and emotional learning (SEL) program, and foundations in three languages by sixth grade:  Spanish, Mandarin and Latin.  A vibrant arts program, diverse after school options, and a caring, values-based community that espouses the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston support the development of well-rounded children who, in the words of our mission:  “love learning, love God, and love one another.”

The Position

Jackson Walnut Park School seeks full-time (11am-6pm) Kid’s Corner Assistants for the 2024-2025 school year.

Broad responsibilities include:

  • Aiding in all aspects of the program in support of the Director and Assistant Director.
  • Assisting in maintaining the cleanliness and order of all program areas to create an aesthetically pleasing environment.
  • Coordinating with other team members to regularly create and implement age-appropriate and fun activities for students.
  • Ensuring the safety and supervision of students is our top priority.  This includes the occasional need for flexibility of hours if a student is picked up late.
  • Communicating effectively and maintaining consistent ground rules with the students.
  • Assisting students with homework if needed. If a student is regularly needing additional help, please bring this to the attention of the Director.
  • Communicating and maintaining a friendly and professional relationship with parents.
  • Referring parents with questions or concerns to the Kids’ Corner Director.
  • Setting up and breaking down the program each year.
  • Understanding and abiding by the policies and procedures within the Kids’ Corner and Jackson Walnut Park School Employee Handbooks.
  • Familiarizing self with Kids’ Corner Parent Handbook for practiced policies and procedures.
  • Attending team meetings at the request of the Director.
  • Attending the faculty and staff meetings at both the beginning and end of the school year.
  • Attending reasonable all school events and scheduled meetings outside of their regularly scheduled hours.  If you are unable to participate it is expected the Kids’ Corner Director is notified in advance.


The ideal candidate will possess or be pursuing a degree with a major in early childhood or elementary education.  She/he will have at least two years prior experience, with a track record of success working with children in a childcare or educational setting.  Pluses include: school experience, familiarity with Montessori and/or Responsive Classroom practices, and First Aid/CPR/Epi-pen training.
