Stoneleigh-Burnham School, an independent girls’ boarding and day school for grades 7-12, seeks an Academic Dean for the 2023-2024 school year. This is a full-time administrative position to begin July 1, 2023.
Located in the Pioneer Valley, a short drive from the Five College Consortium (UMass Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire and Amherst College), Stoneleigh-Burnham School is the only girls’ school in New England to offer the IB Diploma Programme and attracts students from the local area and around the world. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Full-time, twelve-month position
- Oversee the operation and development of the academic program of the school, including:
- Create the master schedule (yearlong and trimester elective courses), the weekly schedule, student academic schedules, academic year calendar, and, in collaboration with the Head of School, teaching assignments and sections
- Oversee progress and grade reports six times each year
- Coordinate textbook and materials ordering
- Monitor incomplete and missing work; coordinate work for medical leaves
- Establish the upper school Honor Roll each trimester
- Coordinate Convocation and end of year awards ceremony
- Chair the Curriculum Committee
- Partner with department chairs, International Baccalaureate Programme Coordinator, and Assistant Head of School to improve/implement curriculum and support faculty
- Establish policies and long-range academic plans for the School
- Oversee academic advising and course selection process for students, families, and advisors
- Manage academic concerns, including academic integrity and long-term student absences, and communicate and coordinate with students, families, teachers, and advisors regarding academics concerns
- Collaborate around hiring of new faculty
- Support, supervise, and evaluate faculty in collaboration with the Assistant Head of School
- Coordinate with the College Counselor and the Registrar to support the college application process
- Serve on the Student Services Team, the Administrative Team, the Deans Team, and the Admissions/Retention Committee
- Teach 1 class or equivalent
- Supervise co-curricular activities (e.g. coaching, clubs, community service activities, etc.)
- Other responsibilities include: advising students, serving on committees, and other routine duties
- Supervise the Director of College Counseling and the Director of the Academic Center
- Residential duty and campus housing a possibility
- Report to the Assistant Head of School
Qualities and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
- Experience in the fields of teaching and learning, ideally in leadership capacity
- Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to connect with and make a positive impact on young people
- The ability to communicate and work effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff, and outside professionals
- Experience in and demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion work that supports a diverse community
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional growth and development
- The desire to work in a boarding school community and be invested in campus life
