6th and 7th Grade Social Studies
Glen Urquhart School, Beverly, MA
6th & 7th Grade Social Studies Teacher
Full-Time, School Year Position (Benefits Eligible)
2026–2027 School Year
Why Glen Urquhart School?
Glen Urquhart School (GUS) is a small, mission-driven, progressive PK–8 school where teachers are known, trusted, and empowered to do meaningful work. Founded in 1977 and located in Beverly Farms on Massachusetts’ North Shore, GUS is rooted in experiential, place-based learning and a deeply collaborative culture.
At GUS, teachers have the time, autonomy, and support to design curriculum that is interdisciplinary, creative, and responsive to students. Faculty work closely together across disciplines, value reflection and innovation, and share a commitment to helping students know themselves, understand others, and engage thoughtfully with the world.
The Position
GUS seeks a reflective, creative, and collaborative 6th & 7th Grade Social Studies Teacher who is excited to teach within a thematic, inquiry-driven program centered on identity, culture, and humanity. This position teaches social studies in both grades and works closely with English, art, math, and other middle school colleagues to design integrated learning experiences.
The ideal candidate is a strong middle school educator who values experiential learning, student voice, and deep thinking—and who is energized by teaching in a small school where relationships matter.
Curriculum at a Glance
Grade 6 – “The People”
Sixth grade social studies explores how humans interact with their environments through work, belief systems, art, recreation, and social structures. Students study ancient civilizations as a lens for understanding cultural difference and continuity. Learning is interdisciplinary and hands-on, including projects such as:
- Experiential explorations of ancient civilizations
- Integrated art and social studies projects
- Local, place-based investigations connected to Indigenous history
- Field trips that extend classroom learning and deepen inquiry
Grade 7 – “Who Am I?”
Seventh grade centers on identity and what it means to be human. Drawing on anthropology, psychology, sociology, and history, students explore:
- Human rights and social justice through research, writing, and artistic expression
- Culture, gender, race, and class through inquiry and data analysis
- Family and society through an immersive, census-based family life simulation
- Creation myths and evolution as origin stories
- Global citizenship through collaboration with an international partner school
Projects emphasize critical thinking, reflection, creativity, and real-world application, and are often integrated with English, art, math, and technology.
Teaching + Learning at GUS
At GUS, diversity, equity, inclusion is not a standalone curriculum but a fundamental throughline embedded in our academic program. We challenge our students and faculty to critically analyze the world by asking: Who writes the stories, who is missing, and who benefits? As a teacher here, you will curate a learning environment built on the “Windows and Mirrors” philosophy – ensuring every child sees themselves reflected in their education while gaining a clear view into the diverse experiences of others.
Technology supports learning rather than drives it. Teachers use tools such as Google Classroom and Google Workspace, EasyBib, BrainPOP, i-Ready, and vocabulary platforms to enhance research, collaboration, and communication.
