1st Grade Teacher
Brimmer and May School, Chestnut Hill, MA
Brimmer and May School seeks a first-grade teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. We are a caring community of learners committed to maintaining rigorous academic standards and implementing innovative educational practices. Homeroom teachers collaborate with their grade-level partner and the Head of Lower School, Assistant Head of Lower School, Lower School Director of Academic Services, and Lower School Director of Teaching and Learning to ensure a developmentally appropriate program for a range of learners. We seek an individual with a growth mindset and a collaborative spirit.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities:
• Teach language arts, reading, math, social studies, science, social-emotional learning, and anti-bias curricula
• Work collaboratively with the creative arts, physical education, library, technology, and world language teachers to ensure an integrated and differentiated approach
• Incorporate emerging technologies into instruction
• Work collaboratively with the grade-level team, Lower School Director of Teaching and Learning, Assistant Head of School, and the Head of Lower School to develop, refine, and document the curriculum and its comprehensive scope and sequence
• Work with the Lower School Director of Academic Services and Math Specialist to implement informal and formal assessments to monitor and document academic development
• Communicate student progress to administrators and in written reports, parent meetings, conferences, and Student Support Team meetings
• Differentiate instruction and set individual goals based on students’ strengths and areas of growth, including those identified in a student’s Accommodation Plan
• Attend weekly faculty meetings, committee meetings, admissions events, and community events, and cover lunch, recess, and other routine duties
• Engage in a program of continued professional growth and development, including the School’s strategic priorities
• Foster a mission-centered, inclusive classroom culture that honors differences and promotes parent engagement
• Participate fully in the School’s new faculty mentor program
• Adhere to all personnel policies, procedures, and rules contained in the Brimmer and May Faculty Handbook
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Experience and passion in using an evidence-based approach to teaching foundational literacy and math skills
• Excellent knowledge of child development, latest education theories and practices, and current trends in education and professional development
• Background in anti-bias and anti-racist curriculum development, materials, and resources
• Knowledge of the social, emotional, and cognitive development of first-grade students
• Ability to teach an integrated curriculum
